This softgel contains 2 active ingredients: lutein and zeaxanthin isomers. Both are carotenoids — plant pigments your eyes naturally use to filter light and protect the macula (the central part of the retina that lets you see fine detail).
You'll find them together in foods like leafy greens, but this product delivers them in concentrated form. The inactive ingredients are safflower oil, bone gelatin, sunflower oil, glycerin, purified water, yellow beeswax, and sunflower lecithin — all there to hold the formula together and keep it stable in the softgel capsule.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
For age-related macular degeneration (AMD), both lutein and zeaxanthin are rated possibly effective — the research suggests they may help, but it's not definitive. For cataracts, lutein is also rated possibly effective.
For other conditions listed — retinitis pigmentosa, retinopathy of prematurity, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia — the evidence doesn't support benefit. Zeaxanthin has also been studied for age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, asthma, and breast cancer, but the evidence for those isn't reliable enough to say one way or the other.
The bottom line: this product may help protect your central vision as you age, but the science isn't ironclad. If you're taking it for AMD or cataract prevention, talk it over with your eye doctor to see if it fits your individual situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lutein from foods and typical supplement doses is generally well tolerated — studies show doses up to 20 mg daily haven't caused adverse effects. Zeaxanthin is also generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses.
Both are rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation, but here's the nuance: lutein is naturally in breast milk, and while lower amounts are fine, safety of higher supplement doses hasn't been well studied. The same caution applies to zeaxanthin in pregnancy and breastfeeding — food sources are fine, but concentrated supplements haven't been studied enough.
