HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Lycopene 10 mg by NewtonEverett
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This softgel contains one active ingredient: lycopene 10 mg, a red carotenoid (plant pigment) found naturally in tomatoes, watermelon, and other red fruits. The capsule is made with soybean oil, corn oil, gelatin, vegetable glycerin, water, and yellow beeswax.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lycopene is possibly effective for prostate cancer support. For bladder cancer, diabetes, and high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), the evidence is either possibly ineffective or too limited to rate.
There isn't enough reliable data yet on its role in exercise-induced asthma or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease).
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lycopene from food is considered safe, and supplement doses at this level are generally well tolerated. The most common side effects from supplements are mild gastrointestinal ones: diarrhea, gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting, or heartburn.
One case of chest pain was reported in a pregnant patient taking a different lycopene product, though a direct link wasn't confirmed. In pregnancy, lycopene from food is fine, but supplement safety hasn't been well studied — talk with your doctor before taking this if you're pregnant.
The same goes for breastfeeding: food amounts are safe, but there isn't enough data on supplements.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel). Lycopene may increase bleeding risk when combined with these medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Lycopene might help with prostate cancer risk, though the evidence is still developing. If you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — there's a theoretical bleeding risk.
Otherwise, it's generally well tolerated. Talk it over with your own healthcare provider to see if it fits your health goals.
