Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Puritan's Pride Lycopene 20 mg is a single-ingredient softgel — just lycopene, a red pigment found naturally in tomatoes and other produce. The capsule itself contains gelatin, corn oil, glycerin, soybean oil, and yellow beeswax as inactive ingredients to hold and deliver the lycopene.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for lycopene is mixed. It's possibly effective for prostate cancer.
For bladder cancer, diabetes, and high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), the data either suggests it probably doesn't help or isn't reliable enough to say. There isn't enough evidence yet on its effects for ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) or exercise-triggered asthma.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lycopene from food is considered safe, and supplement doses at this level are generally well tolerated. The main side effects from supplements are gastrointestinal — diarrhea, gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and loss of appetite in some people.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, food amounts are fine, but lycopene supplements are not well studied in either state. The safety data advises against taking supplements unless your doctor advises otherwise — talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or nursing and considering this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take blood thinners (anticoagulants) like warfarin or antiplatelet drugs like aspirin or clopidogrel, check those exact medications against the interaction tool before adding this product. A Moderate increase in bleeding risk is documented.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a single-ingredient supplement useful mainly if you're interested in prostate health support. Your main concern is blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs — check your medications before starting.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this makes sense for you, especially if you're on any bleeding-risk medications or pregnant or breastfeeding.
