Lycopene Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Lycopene against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Lycopene by Sundown Naturals
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Sundown Naturals Lycopene is a single-ingredient supplement delivering lycopene — a red pigment from tomatoes and other plants that acts as an antioxidant in your body. The softgel capsule itself contains soybean oil, gelatin, corn oil, glycerin, and yellow beeswax as inactive ingredients to hold and deliver the active compound.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for lycopene is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for prostate cancer, but possibly ineffective for bladder cancer and diabetes.
For high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), exercise-induced asthma, and Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS), there isn't enough reliable evidence in the data we hold to say either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lycopene from food is considered safe, and supplement doses are generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal — diarrhea, gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and loss of appetite.
One pregnant patient taking a lycopene product reported chest pain, but it's unclear whether lycopene caused it. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, food amounts of lycopene are fine, but supplements haven't been well studied in either state.
The safety data advises against supplements in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your doctor advises otherwise. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding and want to take this.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check before taking if you're on any blood thinner or antiplatelet drug — warfarin, apixaban, dabigatran, rivaroxaban, edoxaban, clopidogrel, ticagrelor, prasugrel, aspirin for heart protection, or others. Lab data suggests lycopene may increase bleeding risk when combined with these medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Sundown Naturals Lycopene may help with prostate cancer based on current evidence, though more research is needed for other conditions. The main caution is that it can thin your blood slightly, so if you take a blood thinner or antiplatelet medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it.
Pregnant and breastfeeding individuals should also talk it over with their healthcare provider first.

Lycopene by Sundown Naturals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Sundown Naturals Lycopene can interact with blood thinners (anticoagulants) and antiplatelet drugs through its lycopene content.
Lab research shows lycopene has antiplatelet effects — meaning it may thin the blood — so taking it alongside medications that already do that could theoretically raise your bleeding risk. This is a Moderate-severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
If you take warfarin, apixaban, clopidogrel, aspirin for heart protection, or any other blood thinner or antiplatelet medication, run those exact drugs through the checker on this page before starting lycopene. Altogether, these interactions span 122 individual medications.
