HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Maitake Extract by Host Defense Mushrooms
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Host Defense Mushrooms Maitake Extract is a liquid with 2 active ingredients: maitake mycelium extract (fresh) and maitake fruit body extract (dried). Both come from the same mushroom and are mixed in a proprietary blend.
The inactive ingredients are water and alcohol.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold for maitake mushroom doesn't establish it as effective for any condition we checked — the data shows insufficient evidence to rate its use for allergic rhinitis (hay fever), chemotherapy-induced anemia, laryngeal cancer, chemotherapy-induced diarrhea, and chronic fatigue syndrome. That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the studies aren't conclusive enough yet to say.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Maitake is generally well tolerated when eaten as food, but concentrated supplement safety hasn't been fully studied. In clinical trials, gastrointestinal side effects were the most common — a small number of participants reported diarrhea, nausea, or upper stomach pain (epigastric pain).
One person experienced a rash and itching that cleared on its own. Avoid this supplement during pregnancy and while breastfeeding — there isn't enough safety data to know it's okay.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take warfarin (Coumadin) or any blood thinner — maitake may boost its blood-thinning effect. Also clear it if you take blood pressure medication or diabetes medication, since maitake can lower both blood pressure and blood sugar.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Maitake Extract is a mushroom supplement generally well tolerated by mouth, though some people experience digestive upset. It's not proven effective for the conditions we checked, and it has documented interactions with blood thinners, blood pressure meds, and diabetes drugs — all Moderate severity.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, especially if you take warfarin or medications for blood pressure or blood sugar.

Maitake Extract by Host Defense Mushrooms Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Host Defense Mushrooms Maitake Extract interacts with medications through its maitake mushroom content.
The most serious concern is warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner — maitake may increase its anticoagulant effects (making your blood thinner than intended), and one case report documented a patient's blood-thinning level jump to a dangerous range after starting the supplement.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Maitake also has Moderate interactions with blood pressure medications (antihypertensive drugs) and diabetes drugs (antidiabetes agents). Animal research shows maitake can lower blood pressure, so combining it with blood pressure medication might cause your pressure to drop too far.
Clinical research shows maitake can lower blood sugar, so pairing it with diabetes medication raises the theoretical risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
Altogether, these interactions span 260 individual medications. Before you start this supplement, run your exact medications — especially warfarin, blood pressure drugs, and diabetes drugs — through the checker on this page or confirm with your doctor or pharmacist.

Maitake Mycelium Extract, Fresh
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, combining maitake mushroom with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical research shows that taking maitake mushroom polysaccharide (MMP) can lower blood glucose levels in patients with types 2 diabetes.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, combining maitake mushroom with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research shows that maitake mushroom can lower blood pressure.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
There is limited evidence that maitake mushroom may increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
In a case report, a patient previously stabilized on warfarin developed an elevated international normalized ratio (INR) of 5.1 after taking maitake mushroom (Grifron-Pro Maitake D-Fraction) 1 drop/kg daily in three divided doses for one week. The elevated INR resolved after holding warfarin for two days, then reducing the dose by 11%. It is thought that the beta-glucan constituent of maitake mushroom might cause warfarin dissociation from proteins, resulting in increased free warfarin levels and increased warfarin effects.
