Why this applies to Insulin determir

Theoretically, combining maitake mushroom with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.

Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind if you're using Levemir (insulin detemir) alongside maitake mushroom supplements. Levemir already lowers your blood sugar, and some research suggests maitake (especially its concentrated polysaccharide, MMP) can nudge blood sugar down too. Stack the two together and you could end up lower than you intended, which we call hypoglycemia.

Watch for the usual low-sugar warning signs: shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a racing heart, confusion, or sudden hunger. This isn't a sure thing, the evidence is fairly limited, and eating maitake as food is unlikely to cause trouble. But a concentrated supplement is a different story. Before adding it, check in with your doctor or pharmacist so they can help you monitor your readings.

About Maitake Mushroom

What is Maitake Mushroom?

Maitake Mushroom
  • Immune support
  • Blood sugar support in diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • General wellness and antioxidant support

Maitake is an edible mushroom long used as food and in traditional Japanese medicine, and it is being studied for possible immune, blood sugar, and blood pressure effects. The human evidence is still limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. It is generally well tolerated as food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.
