ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
Why this applies to Metformin
Metformin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Maitake Mushroom interacts with.
Clinical research shows that taking maitake mushroom polysaccharide (MMP) can lower blood glucose levels in patients with types 2 diabetes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: maitake mushroom may have its own mild blood-sugar-lowering action. Some research in people with type 2 diabetes shows that maitake polysaccharides can nudge glucose levels down. Since metformin is already working to lower your blood sugar, stacking the two could push it down further than you want.
The main thing to watch for is low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which can show up as shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a fast heartbeat, or feeling confused. The evidence here is still fairly limited, and eating maitake as food is unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated supplements are where I'd be more careful. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it, and keep an eye on your glucose readings if you do.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Siberian Cocklebur (major), Acai (moderate), African Wild Potato (moderate) and Agaricus Mushroom (moderate).
By severity: 2 major · 217 moderate · 39 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Metformin page
“Siberian cocklebur is the ingredient I most want anyone taking metformin (Glucophage) to know about. It has caused severe low blood sugar in people, documented in humans, and it should not be combined with any glucose-lowering medication.”

About Maitake Mushroom
What is Maitake Mushroom?
- Immune support
- Blood sugar support in diabetes
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- General wellness and antioxidant support
Maitake is an edible mushroom long used as food and in traditional Japanese medicine, and it is being studied for possible immune, blood sugar, and blood pressure effects. The human evidence is still limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. It is generally well tolerated as food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.
