These are beneficial microorganisms intended to support digestive and intestinal health. The remaining ingredients are inactive — they're fillers and binders like microcrystalline cellulose and pectin that hold the tablet together.
Turmeric is also listed as an inactive ingredient in this formulation.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for MaxBiotic 4B's individual strains is mixed and incomplete. Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Helicobacter pylori infection, and bacterial vaginosis, though the data aren't conclusive.
Bifidobacterium bifidum is also possibly effective for IBS and possibly effective for respiratory tract infections. For most other conditions listed in our data — including allergic rhinitis, cognitive function, depression, constipation, and diabetes — the evidence is insufficient to say whether these strains work.
No effectiveness rating exists for the whole product formula, only for individual strains.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These probiotic strains are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. The most common side effects reported with probiotic use are mild gastrointestinal ones — bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea — but these occur infrequently.
There is a theoretical concern with any live probiotic that in rare cases, the bacteria might cause infection in patients who are severely ill, have weakened immune systems, or have certain types of catheters in place; however, such cases are uncommon in otherwise healthy people. For pregnancy, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are both rated possibly safe, and Streptococcus thermophilus is also rated possibly safe.
Data on Lactobacillus helveticus during pregnancy and lactation aren't on file. Given the limited safety information, it's wise to talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a weakened immune system.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Lactobacillus helveticus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus helveticus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. helveticus.
Lactobacillus helveticus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. helveticus preparations by at least two hours.
