Ertapenem falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Bifidum interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing: ertapenem (Invanz) is a strong carbapenem antibiotic, and its whole job is to kill bacteria. The catch is that your Bifidobacterium bifidum probiotic is made of live, friendly bacteria. The antibiotic can't tell the difference between harmful germs and the helpful ones in your supplement, so it may wipe out a good chunk of those probiotic organisms and leave you with less benefit from them.

This works in one direction only: the antibiotic may weaken the probiotic, but the probiotic does not make ertapenem less effective or more dangerous. So your infection treatment stays on track. This is a theoretical concern based on how things work, not a proven harm. A simple fix is spacing them apart. Your pharmacist can confirm the best timing for you.

About Ertapenem Injection

What Is Ertapenem Injection Used For?

Brand name: Invanz

Ertapenem injection (brand name Invanz) is used to treat moderate to severe infections in adults and children 3 months and older, including complicated abdominal infections, complicated skin and skin structure infections (including diabetic foot infections without bone infection), community-acquired pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections including pyelonephritis (kidney infection), and acute pelvic infections such as postpartum uterine infection, septic abortion, and post-surgical gynecologic infections.

In adults only, Invanz is also used to prevent surgical site infection following elective colorectal surgery. It works only against infections caused by bacteria that are susceptible to it — it will not treat viral infections.
