Ertapenem falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Breve interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium breve with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. breve.
Since B. breve preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. breve preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the simple version: this one runs in the opposite direction from what people usually worry about. Ertapenem won't be weakened by your probiotic. Instead, it's the Bifidobacterium breve that takes the hit. Ertapenem is a powerful antibiotic that kills bacteria, and it can't tell the difference between the bugs causing your infection and the friendly ones in your probiotic capsule.

So if you swallow them at the same time, the antibiotic may simply wipe out many of those live organisms before they ever do their job. The good news is this is theoretical and easy to manage. A common suggestion is to space them out by at least 2 hours. Your ertapenem (often given by injection) will still work fine. If you're unsure how to time things, just ask your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Ertapenem Injection Used For?

Brand name: Invanz

Ertapenem injection (brand name Invanz) is used to treat moderate to severe infections in adults and children 3 months and older, including complicated abdominal infections, complicated skin and skin structure infections (including diabetic foot infections without bone infection), community-acquired pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections including pyelonephritis (kidney infection), and acute pelvic infections such as postpartum uterine infection, septic abortion, and post-surgical gynecologic infections.

In adults only, Invanz is also used to prevent surgical site infection following elective colorectal surgery. It works only against infections caused by bacteria that are susceptible to it — it will not treat viral infections.
