Nitrofurantoin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Breve interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium breve with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. breve.
Since B. breve preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. breve preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: nitrofurantoin (Macrobid, Macrodantin) is an antibiotic, and antibiotics don't pick favorites. They go after bacteria, and the live Bifidobacterium breve in your probiotic is bacteria too. So if you swallow them at the same time, the nitrofurantoin may kill off a good chunk of those friendly organisms before they ever get to work. This doesn't make your antibiotic weaker or more dangerous, it just means your probiotic dose may be partly wasted.

The simple fix is timing. Try to space your probiotic and your nitrofurantoin by at least 2 hours. This is a theoretical concern based on how these products behave, not a proven harm, so don't stress. As always, run your routine by your pharmacist if you're unsure.

About Nitrofurantoin

What Is Nitrofurantoin Used For?

Brand names: Macrodantin, Furadantin, Furatoin, Macrobid

Nitrofurantoin is used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by certain susceptible bacteria. The capsule forms (including Macrodantin) are indicated for UTIs due to susceptible strains of Escherichia coli, enterococci, Staphylococcus aureus, and certain strains of Klebsiella and Enterobacter species. Nitrofurantoin oral suspension (Furadantin) is indicated for adults and children 1 month of age and older for the same types of UTIs.

Nitrofurantoin is not used for kidney infections (pyelonephritis) or infections of the tissue around the kidney (perinephric abscesses). Because it works primarily in the urine and does not spread widely through body tissues, it may not fully clear the infection in some patients, and the UTI may return after treatment.
