Ceftazidime falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Breve interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium breve with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. breve.
Since B. breve preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. breve preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the simple version: this one runs in the opposite direction from most drug interactions. Ceftazidime is an antibiotic, and its whole job is to kill bacteria. Your probiotic, Bifidobacterium breve, is live, friendly bacteria. So if you take them at the same time, the antibiotic can wipe out a good chunk of those probiotic organisms before they ever get a chance to settle in your gut. The loser here is the probiotic, not the drug.

Good news: this won't make your ceftazidime any weaker or change its side effects. It just means you may not get full value from the probiotic. A common tip is to separate the two by at least a couple of hours. This is theory based on how each works, so check with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

About Ceftazidime Injection

What Is Ceftazidime Injection Used For?

Brand names: Ceftazidime, Fortaz, Tazidime, Ceptaz, Tazicef

Ceftazidime injection is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria in several parts of the body. These include lower respiratory tract infections (including pneumonia), urinary tract infections (both simple and complicated), skin and skin-structure infections, bone and joint infections, gynecologic infections, intra-abdominal infections (including peritonitis), bacterial septicemia (bloodstream infection), and central nervous system infections including meningitis.

Tazicef (ceftazidime for injection, USP) may be used on its own for confirmed or suspected sepsis, or combined with other antibiotics such as aminoglycosides, vancomycin, or clindamycin for severe or life-threatening infections and in patients with weakened immune systems. Treatment is intended only for infections proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria that respond to ceftazidime.
