Metronidazole falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Breve interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium breve with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. breve.
Since B. breve preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. breve preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: Metronidazole (Flagyl) is an antibiotic, and probiotics like Bifidobacterium breve are live, friendly bacteria. If you swallow them at the same time, the antibiotic can kill off a good chunk of those probiotic organisms before they get a chance to do their job. So this interaction isn't about metronidazole becoming dangerous or less effective. Your infection treatment should work just fine. It's the probiotic that may lose some of its punch.

The easy fix is timing. Try to space your Bifidobacterium breve and your metronidazole dose by at least 2 hours. This is based on how these products work rather than hard clinical studies, so it's a sensible precaution, not an emergency. If you have questions, your pharmacist can help you map out a schedule.

Metronidazole treats three main types of infections. It's used for trichomoniasis (a sexually transmitted parasitic infection), amebiasis (an intestinal or liver infection caused by a parasite), and serious anaerobic bacterial infections — infections caused by bacteria that thrive without oxygen, which can affect the abdomen, skin, bones, lungs, and other areas.

Because sexual partners can pass trichomoniasis back and forth, both partners are typically treated at the same time, even if one has no symptoms.
