Ertapenem falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Animalis Subsp. Lactis interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium lactis with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. lactis.
Since B. lactis preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. lactis preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the simple version: this one runs in the opposite direction from what most people worry about. Ertapenem (Invanz) won't be weakened by your probiotic, and the probiotic won't make ertapenem stronger or more dangerous. Ertapenem is a powerful antibiotic that kills bacteria, and that includes the friendly Bifidobacterium lactis you're swallowing. So the real concern is that the antibiotic may wipe out a good chunk of those live probiotic organisms, leaving you less of the benefit you paid for.

Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how antibiotics work, not a safety emergency. Since ertapenem is given as an injection, timing with an oral probiotic is less of an issue, but it's still smart to check with your pharmacist or doctor about spacing them out.

About Ertapenem Injection

What Is Ertapenem Injection Used For?

Brand name: Invanz

Ertapenem injection (brand name Invanz) is used to treat moderate to severe infections in adults and children 3 months and older, including complicated abdominal infections, complicated skin and skin structure infections (including diabetic foot infections without bone infection), community-acquired pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections including pyelonephritis (kidney infection), and acute pelvic infections such as postpartum uterine infection, septic abortion, and post-surgical gynecologic infections.

In adults only, Invanz is also used to prevent surgical site infection following elective colorectal surgery. It works only against infections caused by bacteria that are susceptible to it — it will not treat viral infections.
