Fidaxomicin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Bifidum interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: this interaction runs in one direction. Fidaxomicin is an antibiotic that kills bacteria in your gut to treat C. difficile diarrhea. The catch is that Bifidobacterium bifidum is itself a live bacteria, so taking it at the same time as fidaxomicin means the antibiotic may simply kill off a good chunk of the probiotic before it can do anything. In other words, the probiotic loses its punch, not the other way around.

Your fidaxomicin will still work just fine, and you don't need to worry about extra side effects from this combo. This is a theoretical concern based on how the two work, not something proven in studies. If you want to take both, a simple fix is to space them apart by at least 2 hours. Always run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Fidaxomicin Used For?

Brand name: Dificid

Fidaxomicin treats C. difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) — a bacterial infection in the gut caused by Clostridioides difficile that leads to significant diarrhea and intestinal inflammation. Fidaxomicin tablets are approved for adult patients. Dificid (as tablets or oral suspension) is approved for both adults and children 6 months of age and older.

Because fidaxomicin works almost entirely inside the gut and is barely absorbed into the bloodstream, it is only effective against C. difficile and should not be used for any other type of infection.
