Motherwort Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herb Pharm
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Motherwort against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Motherwort Flowering Aerial Parts Extract. It's a concentrated liquid form, so you're getting the herb in a more potent delivery than a dried tea or capsule would give you.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for motherwort is mixed and incomplete. It's possibly effective for bleeding; however, the data aren't strong enough to rate it for anxiety, amenorrhea (absent periods), asthma, or alcohol use disorder.
If you're considering it for one of those uses, the science just isn't there yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Motherwort appears to be generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects are diarrhea and stomach irritation.
If you take more than 3 grams, there's a risk of uterine bleeding. Applied to skin, it can cause contact dermatitis (a rash) or photosensitivity (sun sensitivity).
The safety data in humans are limited, and motherwort is traditionally thought to stimulate the uterus, so it should be avoided in pregnancy. There is not enough information to know whether it's safe during breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start Motherwort, check whether you take CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, or certain pain relievers). Combining motherwort with these can increase sedation.
Use the medication checker on this page to verify your exact drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Motherwort may appeal to you if you're looking for an herbal option for bleeding or other traditional uses, but the evidence is thin for most conditions people ask about. If you take any medications — especially sleep aids, sedatives, or pain relievers — talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting.
It's not suitable in pregnancy.

Motherwort by Herb Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herb Pharm's Motherwort is a single-ingredient liquid extract that does interact with medications.
The main concern is with CNS depressants (drugs that slow brain and nervous system activity, like sedatives, sleep aids, and some pain relievers) — motherwort itself can cause sedation, and taking it together with these medications may increase drowsiness and sedation risk. This is a moderate-severity interaction.

Although we've identified this interaction category, the specific medications affected span a large range. We'd recommend checking your exact prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs with the medication checker below before you start, especially if you take anything for sleep, anxiety, or pain.
Although we hold interaction data for the one active ingredient in this product, a few inactive ingredients (cane alcohol and distilled water) were not checked. Altogether, these interactions span 248 individual medications.
