Inositol is generally well tolerated at common doses. The most frequent side effects are mild and digestive — diarrhea, gas, and nausea.

One clinical study found that inositol combined with omega-3 fatty acids was linked to cold and allergy symptoms in some children, though this was in a specific combination product. There's a single case report of a man with bipolar disorder who developed manic symptoms after consuming multiple cans of an energy drink containing inositol and several other ingredients over a few days, but it's unclear whether inositol was the cause.
