Myrrh hasn't been studied much when taken by mouth long-term, so we can't say it's entirely well tolerated in that form. Short-term topical use or mouth rinses are generally considered fine.

When taken orally, myrrh can cause diarrhea at doses of 2 to 4 grams. Applied to skin, it may trigger dermatitis in some people.

Myrrh is traditionally thought to stimulate the uterus, so the safety data advises against use during pregnancy — and indeed, severe abdominal pain was reported in a pregnant woman taking myrrh. There isn't enough safety information during breastfeeding, so it's best avoided then too.

Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, myrrh might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
In vitro and animal research suggests that myrrh has hypoglycemic effects.
