How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Most of NatruLAX's ingredients are generally well tolerated in typical doses. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal: gas, bloating, diarrhea, cramping, and abdominal discomfort — which are often expected with bowel-support products.
Fennel, prune, apple pectin, and carob are well tolerated when used as food or in supplement amounts, though concentrated doses are less studied. Serious adverse effects are rare across the board but can include allergic reactions (fennel, apple pectin, fig, date, carob), seizures (fennel, reported rarely), and in very rare cases anaphylaxis (fig, apple pectin).
Senna and cascara sagrada can cause skin eruptions and long-term use risks electrolyte imbalances. Fig leaf may cause photodermatitis (sun-sensitive skin rash) — avoid excessive sun exposure if using fig-containing products.
Cascara sagrada is not recommended for extended use without medical supervision. Chickweed is considered likely safe in pregnancy and lactation, but concentrated supplements lack study.
Fennel is rated Possibly Unsafe in pregnancy and lactation due to its hormone-like effects — avoid medicinal or concentrated amounts. Senna is rated Possibly Safe in both.
Fig fruit is rated Likely Safe. Prune, cassia cinnamon, and carob are rated Likely Safe in pregnancy and lactation, though concentrated supplements are less studied.
Safety data on cascara sagrada in pregnancy are insufficient (listed as blank); the safety notes advise against it. Tamarind, buckthorn, and date lack pregnancy/lactation safety information in our data.

NatruLAX by Clarify contains several ingredients with documented interactions with medications.
The most serious concern is fennel, which has Moderate-severity interactions with multiple drug types. Fennel may reduce the effectiveness of contraceptive drugs and hormone replacement therapy due to its estrogenic compounds, and it could theoretically increase the blood levels of drugs metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP3A4 — though this hasn't been confirmed in humans.
Fennel also carries a Moderate risk of increased bleeding when paired with blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs), and may reduce the effectiveness of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin or the cancer drug tamoxifen.

Several other ingredients pose Moderate-severity risks. Senna — a stimulant laxative — may interfere with estrogen absorption, increase the risk of dangerously low potassium (hypokalemia) when combined with diuretics, and can amplify the blood-thinning effects of warfarin.
Cascara sagrada carries similar concerns with diuretics, corticosteroids, warfarin, and the heart medication digoxin. Prune (plum) may increase bleeding risk with blood thinners.
Apple pectin can reduce absorption of the statin lovastatin, tetracycline antibiotics, and the heart medication digoxin. Fig leaf may lower blood sugar too far if you're on diabetes medications or insulin, and raises photosensitivity risk with certain drugs.
Cassia cinnamon may add to the blood-sugar-lowering effect of diabetes medications. Tamarind can boost the effects of ibuprofen and aspirin, and may lower blood sugar when combined with diabetes drugs.
Carob (St. John's bread) has a Minor interaction with oral medications generally — it may reduce their absorption, so take carob 30–60 minutes apart from doses.
Chickweed was checked and shows no interactions documented in our data, though safety data overall are limited. We could not check buckthorn or oat bran for interactions — no data are on file for these.

St. John's bread
Oral Drugs
Theoretically, carob might also impair the absorption of oral drugs.
Laboratory research shows that carob, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Take carob 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Cascara sagrada
Corticosteroids
Theoretically, cascara sagrada might increase the risk of hypokalemia when taken with corticosteroids.
Cascara sagrada has stimulant laxative effects, and long-term use has been associated with hypokalemia.
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Theoretically, cascara sagrada might cause hypokalemia, potentially increasing the risk of digoxin toxicity.
Cascara sagrada has stimulant laxative effects, and long-term use has been associated with hypokalemia.
Diuretic Drugs
Theoretically, cascara sagrada might increase the risk of hypokalemia when taken with diuretic drugs.
Cascara sagrada has stimulant laxative effects, and long-term use has been associated with hypokalemia.
Stimulant Laxatives
Theoretically, cascara sagrada might have additive adverse effects when taken with stimulant laxatives.
Cascara sagrada has stimulant laxative effects and might compound fluid and electrolyte losses when taken with stimulant laxatives.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, cascara sagrada might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with warfarin.
Cascara sagrada has stimulant laxative effects. In some people, cascara sagrada can cause diarrhea. Diarrhea can increase the effects of warfarin, increase international normalized ratio (INR), and increase the risk of bleeding.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, cascara sagrada might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that cascara sagrada can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.
Fennel
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, fennel might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
Animal research suggests that fennel oil has antithrombotic and antiplatelet effects.
Ciprofloxacin (Cipro)
Theoretically, fennel might decrease the levels and clinical effects of ciprofloxacin.
Animal research shows that fennel reduces ciprofloxacin bioavailability by nearly 50%, possibly due to the metal cations such as calcium, iron, and magnesium contained in fennel. This study also found that fennel increased tissue distribution and slowed elimination of ciprofloxacin.
Contraceptive Drugs
Theoretically, taking large amounts of fennel might decrease the effects of contraceptive drugs due to competition for estrogen receptors.
Some constituents of fennel have estrogenic activity.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, fennel might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research suggests that fennel inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Estrogens
Theoretically, taking large amounts of fennel might interfere with hormone replacement therapy due to competition for estrogen receptors.
Some constituents of fennel have estrogenic activity.
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)
Theoretically, taking large amounts of fennel might decrease the antiestrogenic effect of tamoxifen.
Some constituents of fennel have estrogenic activity, which may interfere with the antiestrogenic activity of tamoxifen.
Cassia
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, cassia cinnamon may have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs.
Cassia cinnamon may lower blood glucose levels, and have additive effects in patients treated with antidiabetic agents. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications might be necessary.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, large doses of cassia cinnamon might cause additive effects when used with hepatotoxic drugs.
There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of cassia cinnamon for an extended duration might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, which can cause hepatotoxicity in animal models. In humans, very high doses of coumarin from 50-7000 mg/day can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.
Fig
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, fig leaf might enhance the blood glucose lowering effects of hypoglycemic drugs.
A small clinical study in patients with type 1 diabetes shows that consuming a tea made from fig leaves modestly reduces postprandial glucose levels and insulin requirements.
Insulin
Fig leaf may enhance the blood glucose lowering effects of insulin.

Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, fig might increase the risk of photosensitivity when used in combination with photosensitizing drugs.
Many cases of photodermatitis from fig leaf have been reported. Some drugs that also cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.
Buckthorn
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, sea buckthorn may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Clinical research suggests that sea buckthorn fruit extracts can inhibit platelet aggregation and adhesion to collagen and fibrinogen.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking sea buckthorn with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Taking sea buckthorn appears to reduce blood pressure in some patients.
Senna
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Theoretically, senna might increase the risk of adverse effects when taken with digoxin.
Overuse/abuse of senna increases the risk of adverse effects from cardiac glycosides, such as digoxin, due to potassium depletion.
Diuretic Drugs
Theoretically, senna might increase the risk of hypokalemia when taken with diuretic drugs.
Overuse of senna might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss and increase the risk for hypokalemia.
Estrogens
Theoretically, taking senna may interfere with the absorption of exogenous estrogens.
Some preliminary clinical evidence suggests that senna reduces the absorption of estradiol and decreases serum concentrations of estrone and estrone sulfate by decreasing intestinal transit time.
Stimulant Laxatives
Theoretically, senna might increase the risk for fluid and electrolyte loss when taken with other stimulant laxatives.
Senna is a stimulant laxative; concomitant use with other stimulant laxatives might compound fluid and electrolyte loss.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, excessive use of senna might increase the effects of warfarin.
Senna has stimulant laxative effects and can cause diarrhea. Diarrhea can increase the effects of warfarin, increase international normalized ratio (INR), and increase the risk of bleeding. In one case report, excessive use of senna for 3 weeks resulted in diarrhea, bloody stools, and an elevated INR of 11.9.
Tamarind
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, tamarind seed extract might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that an extract of tamarind seed can reduce fasting blood glucose levels. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
Aspirin
Theoretically, tamarind fruit extract might increase the effects and side effects of aspirin.
Taking tamarind fruit extract as a component of millet porridge concurrently with aspirin seems to increase aspirin absorption and blood levels.
Ibuprofen (Advil, Others)
Theoretically, tamarind fruit extract might increase the effects and side effects of ibuprofen.
Taking tamarind fruit extract as a component of millet porridge concurrently with ibuprofen seems to increase ibuprofen absorption and blood levels.
Prune
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, plum juice might have antiplatelet effects.
Consuming plum juice while taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding. In healthy volunteers, drinking plum juice 200 mL daily for 28 days prolonged clotting time and inhibited platelet aggregation.
Apple Pectin
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of digoxin, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
A small clinical study shows that taking digoxin with a kaolin-pectin suspension reduces the absorption of digoxin by about 62%. It is unclear if these effects are due to pectin, kaolin, or the combination.
Lovastatin (Mevacor)
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of lovastatin, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
Case reports suggest that concomitant use of pectin and lovastatin might reduce the cholesterol-lowering effect of lovastatin, possibly due to reduced intestinal absorption of lovastatin.
Tetracycline Antibiotics
Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, potentially decreasing their effectiveness.
A small clinical study shows that taking tetracycline with bismuth subsalicylate in a kaolin-pectin suspension reduces the absorption of tetracycline by about 34%. It is unclear if these effects are due to pectin, kaolin, bismuth subsalicylate, or the combination.
