Nettle Leaf Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Nettle Leaf against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Nettle Leaf by Indiana Botanic Gardens
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: nettle (leaf) extract, which comes from the stinging nettle plant. The extract is delivered in a liquid form with glycerin and water as inactive ingredients (the carriers that make it pourable and stable).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Stinging nettle is possibly effective for diabetes — clinical research suggests it may help lower blood sugar in people with diabetes. For allergic rhinitis (hay fever), anemia, asthma, benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), and gingivitis (gum inflammation), the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Orally, nettle leaf extract is generally well tolerated when used as directed, though a small number of people report constipation or diarrhea. There are rare case reports of liver inflammation (liver injury) in people taking herbal products containing nettle along with other ingredients, so watch for abdominal pain or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Nettle leaf extract is rated likely unsafe in pregnancy because of traditional concerns about effects on the uterus — the safety data advises against it during pregnancy. Safety during breastfeeding has not been established, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it while breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, confirm with your doctor or pharmacist if you take warfarin or other blood thinners (Moderate risk), antidiabetes drugs (Moderate risk), diuretics or water pills (Moderate risk), or lithium (Moderate risk). No interactions are documented for other medication types in our data, but that doesn't mean none exist — your own healthcare provider has the full picture of your medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you have type 2 diabetes or are interested in blood sugar support, nettle leaf may be worth a conversation with your doctor. If you take warfarin, a diuretic, lithium, or any diabetes medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — the interactions are real and may need dose adjustments.
Avoid it if you're pregnant; talk with your healthcare provider if you're breastfeeding or have any liver concerns.

Nettle Leaf by Indiana Botanic Gardens Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Indiana Botanic Gardens Nettle Leaf contains stinging nettle extract, which interacts with four medication types: antidiabetes drugs, diuretics (water pills), lithium, and warfarin (a blood thinner).
The most serious concern is with warfarin — nettle is high in vitamin K, which can interfere with how the drug thins your blood, especially at higher doses.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
With antidiabetes medications and diuretics, the interaction is Moderate in both cases. Nettle may lower blood sugar on its own, so combining it with diabetes drugs could push your levels too low.
Similarly, nettle appears to have mild water-shedding properties, and adding a diuretic drug on top may amplify that effect.
Lithium is another Moderate concern. Nettle's diuretic properties may affect how your kidneys clear lithium from your body, potentially raising your lithium levels — which means your dose might need adjustment.
Although interactions are documented only for these four medication types, 164 individual medications fall into these categories overall. If you take any blood thinner, diabetes medication, water pill, or lithium, run it through our interaction checker below before starting this product.

Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, stinging nettle might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs.
Clinical research shows that stinging nettle might decrease blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes.
Diuretic Drugs
Theoretically, combining stinging nettle with diuretic drugs may have additive effects.
Animal research suggests that the above ground parts and roots of stinging nettle may have a diuretic effect.
Lithium
Theoretically, stinging nettle might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Animal research suggests that stinging nettle has diuretic and natriuretic properties, which could alter the excretion of lithium. The dose of lithium might need to be decreased.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
There is some concern that stinging nettle might decrease the effects of anticoagulant drugs such as warfarin.
Stinging nettle contains a significant amount of vitamin K. When taken in large quantities, this might interfere with the activity of warfarin.
