Potassium iodide is the primary active ingredient and supplies iodine—an essential mineral your body needs for thyroid function and other roles. The herbal ingredients (rosemary, cumin, chaga, oregano, and kelp) are added for their traditional or proposed supportive properties.
The product also contains pullulan, an inactive ingredient used as a capsule material.

Not established
Potassium iodide is likely effective for preventing thyroid problems from radiation exposure and for correcting iodine deficiency. It is possibly effective for oral mucositis (mouth sores) and periodontitis (gum disease).
For the other ingredients in this product—rosemary, selenium, cumin, chaga, and oregano—the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate their effectiveness for the conditions listed. How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Potassium iodide is well tolerated in normal dietary amounts, but high doses can cause thyroid problems including both overactive and underactive thyroid. The most common side effects are abdominal upset, diarrhea, nausea, headache, and metallic taste.
Rare serious side effects include hypersensitivity reactions such as anaphylaxis. High doses taken over time may cause acneform skin lesions (iododerma).
Selenium yeast is generally well tolerated within recommended amounts, but excess can be toxic; common side effects include gastric discomfort, headache, and rash. Rosemary, cumin, oregano, and chaga can rarely cause allergic reactions including anaphylaxis in sensitive individuals.
Chaga contains high concentrations of oxalate and has been linked to kidney failure and acute kidney disease with excessive consumption. For pregnancy and lactation, iodine is rated likely safe in adequate amounts needed for your baby's development, but avoid high-dose products and use only what your doctor advises.
Rosemary, cumin, oregano, and chaga are best avoided in medicinal or supplement amounts during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data; food amounts are generally considered acceptable. Safety data for selenium and chaga during pregnancy and breastfeeding are not on file.

The most serious concerns involve potassium iodide, which can interact with lithium, antithyroid drugs, and the heart rhythm medication amiodarone—all at Moderate severity. With lithium, iodine may worsen low thyroid hormone levels (hypothyroidism); with antithyroid drugs, it may unpredictably alter their effectiveness; and with amiodarone (which itself contains a large amount of iodine), the combination risks excessively high iodine levels and thyroid damage.

The product's rosemary, selenium yeast, cumin, chaga, and oregano all interact with blood thinners and blood-thinning drugs (anticoagulants and antiplatelet medications), theoretically raising bleeding risk. Rosemary and cumin may also increase bleeding risk with aspirin and aspirin-like salicylate drugs.
Selenium, cumin, chaga, and oregano interact with blood sugar medications (antidiabetes drugs), with animal evidence suggesting they may lower blood glucose and heighten the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Selenium may also interfere with immunosuppressant drugs and barbiturate sedatives, and may affect warfarin activity.
Rosemary can theoretically decrease the effectiveness of certain medications metabolized by a liver enzyme (CYP1A2 substrates). Cumin may increase the effects of rifampin (an antibiotic).
Selenium and chaga may interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.

Rosemary, Wild
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, rosemary may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro and animal research suggests that rosemary inhibits platelet aggregation.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking rosemary with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research shows that rosemary extract can decrease blood glucose levels in diabetic models. However, research in humans is conflicting. Although rosemary powder decreased blood glucose levels in healthy adults, no change in blood glucose levels was seen in adults with type 2 diabetes, most of whom were taking antidiabetes drugs.
Aspirin
Theoretically, rosemary might have additive effects with salicylate-containing drugs such as aspirin.
Rosemary is reported to contain salicylates.
Choline Magnesium Trisalicylate (Trilisate)
Theoretically, rosemary might have additive effects with salicylate-containing drugs such as choline magnesium trisalicylate.
Rosemary is reported to contain salicylate.
Salsalate (Disalcid)
Theoretically, rosemary might have additive effects with salicylate-containing drugs such as salsalate.
Rosemary is reported to contain salicylate.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, rosemary might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that rosemary induces CYP1A2 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Chaga, Powder, Raw, Wild
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, chaga may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro and animal research suggests that chaga extract can inhibit platelet aggregation. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking chaga with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research suggests that chaga might decrease blood glucose levels and increase insulin levels. This has not been reported in humans.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, chaga might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
In vitro research suggests that certain constituents of chaga stimulate immune function. This has not been reported in humans.
Selenium Yeast
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Selenium may have antiplatelet effects and may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Clinical research suggests that taking selenium 10 mcg/kg/day can increase bleeding times by increasing prostacyclin production, which inhibits platelet activity. Other clinical research suggests that taking selenium 75 mcg daily, in combination with ascorbic acid 600 mg, alpha-tocopherol 300 mg, and beta-carotene 27 mg, reduces platelet aggregation.
Barbiturates
Theoretically, selenium might prolong the sedating effects of barbiturates.
Laboratory research suggests that selenium can inhibit the hepatic metabolism of barbiturates. Selenium seems to prolong the sedative effect of pentobarbital in animal models.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, selenium supplementation may reduce the effectiveness of immunosuppressant therapy.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggests that selenium may stimulate the immune system.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, selenium might interfere with warfarin activity.
Animal research suggests that selenium can increase warfarin activity. Selenium might interact with warfarin by displacing it from albumin binding sites, reducing its metabolism in the liver, or by decreasing production of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors. Selenium can also prolong bleeding times in humans by increasing prostacyclin production, which inhibits platelet activity.
Contraceptive Drugs
Contraceptive drugs might increase levels of selenium, although the clinical significance of this effect is unclear.
Some research suggests that oral contraceptives increase serum selenium levels in women taking oral contraceptives; however, other research shows no change in selenium levels. It is suggested that an increase could be due to increased carrier proteins, indicating a redistribution of selenium rather than a change in total body selenium.
Niacin
Selenium might reduce the beneficial effects of niacin on high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels.
A combination of niacin and simvastatin (Zocor) effectively raises HDL cholesterol levels in patients with coronary disease and low HDL levels. Clinical research shows that taking a combination of antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, and selenium) along with niacin and simvastatin (Zocor) attenuates this rise in HDL, specifically the HDL-2 and apolipoprotein A1 fractions, by more than 50% in patients with coronary disease. It is not known whether this adverse effect is due to a single antioxidant such as selenium, or to the combination. It also is not known whether it will occur in other patient populations.
Cumin, Powder, Wild
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, cumin might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
In vitro evidence suggests that cumin can inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, cumin might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, cumin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that cumin can lower blood sugar in diabetic animals. However, research in humans with and without diabetes has found conflicting results.
Rifampin (Rifadin)
Theoretically, cumin might increase the effects and adverse effects of rifampin.
Animal research suggests that an aqueous extract of cumin containing a specific flavonoid glycoside can increase the bioavailability and plasma levels of rifampin.
Oregano, Wild
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, oregano might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research shows that aristolochic acid isolated from oregano leaves has antithrombin activity. It has also been reported that oregano oil inhibits arachidonic acid-induced, and ADP-induced, platelet aggregation.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, oregano might increase the risk for hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
In vitro and animal research shows that oregano extracts might lower blood glucose levels.
Potassium Iodide
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Combining iodine with amiodarone might cause excessively high iodine levels.
Amiodarone contains 37.3% iodine and can increase iodine levels. Concomitant use with iodine might increase the risk of having excessive iodine levels and adversely affecting thyroid function. Monitor thyroid function.
Antithyroid Drugs
Iodine might alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking iodine while using antithyroid drugs could alter the effects of the antithyroid drugs.
Lithium
Combining iodine with lithium might have additive hypothyroid effects.
Lithium can inhibit thyroid function. Several case reports suggest that concomitant use of lithium and potassium iodide can reduce thyroid function in otherwise healthy adults. Monitor thyroid function.
