Selenium and Abrocitinib

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Selenium interacts with whole categories of medication. Abrocitinib falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Selenium in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Abrocitinib

Abrocitinib falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Selenium interacts with.

Selenium may have antiplatelet effects and may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Clinical research suggests that taking selenium 10 mcg/kg/day can increase bleeding times by increasing prostacyclin production, which inhibits platelet activity. Other clinical research suggests that taking selenium 75 mcg daily, in combination with ascorbic acid 600 mg, alpha-tocopherol 300 mg, and beta-carotene 27 mg, reduces platelet aggregation.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's something worth knowing if you take abrocitinib (Cibinqo) for your eczema. This medication can lower your platelet count on its own, which is why your doctor checks bloodwork during treatment. Selenium, in higher supplement doses, may also make platelets a little less sticky and slightly stretch out bleeding times. Stacking the two together could, in theory, raise the chance of easy bruising or bleeding that's slow to stop.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: the selenium concern comes mostly from lab and small clinical studies, not strong human evidence, and everyday food amounts of selenium aren't likely to matter. Concentrated supplements are the bigger question. Before adding a selenium pill, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

2 of 2

Abrocitinib also falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS.

Theoretically, selenium supplementation may reduce the effectiveness of immunosuppressant therapy.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggests that selenium may stimulate the immune system.

Here's the thinking on this pairing. Abrocitinib (Cibinqo) works by calming down part of your immune system to ease your eczema. Selenium, on the other hand, may give the immune system a little nudge in the opposite direction. So in theory, taking selenium supplements could work against what Cibinqo is trying to do, and you might notice your skin getting itchier, drier, or flaring up again.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's based mainly on lab and early research, not solid human studies, so it's more of a theoretical concern than a proven problem. The selenium you get from a normal diet shouldn't be an issue. If you're thinking about a concentrated supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or dermatologist first.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Abrocitinib page

“Bleeding is where I'd focus first with abrocitinib (Cibinqo), an eczema pill that can itself lower platelet counts. Of the 290 supplements and herbs with an interaction on file, 202 have blood-thinning or antiplatelet activity, and two of the three major-rated entries, danshen and piracetam, sit in that group.”

About Selenium

What is Selenium?

  • Thyroid health support
  • Antioxidant support
  • Immune support
  • General nutrient supplementation
  • Reproductive/fertility support

Selenium is an essential trace mineral your body needs in small amounts for thyroid function, antioxidant defense, and immune health. Most people who eat a varied diet get enough, and supplements are mainly useful for those who are deficient. Because too much selenium can be toxic, stick to recommended amounts and check with your pharmacist or doctor before supplementing.
