Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS
Why this applies to Ulipristal Acetate
Ulipristal Acetate falls under CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS — the group Selenium interacts with.
Some research suggests that oral contraceptives increase serum selenium levels in women taking oral contraceptives; however, other research shows no change in selenium levels. It is suggested that an increase could be due to increased carrier proteins, indicating a redistribution of selenium rather than a change in total body selenium.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the good news: this is a very mild interaction, and it runs in the opposite direction from what people usually worry about. The concern on file isn't that selenium changes how well ulipristal (Ella) works. Instead, it's that contraceptive medications might nudge your blood selenium levels up a little. Even then, the research is mixed, and the change likely reflects selenium moving around in your blood rather than your body actually holding onto more of it.
For a single emergency dose of Ella, this really shouldn't affect how it prevents pregnancy or cause new side effects. Ella works just fine alongside normal selenium intake. If you take a concentrated selenium supplement regularly, it's still smart to stick to recommended amounts and run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

About Selenium
What is Selenium?
- Thyroid health support
- Antioxidant support
- Immune support
- General nutrient supplementation
- Reproductive/fertility support
Selenium is an essential trace mineral your body needs in small amounts for thyroid function, antioxidant defense, and immune health. Most people who eat a varied diet get enough, and supplements are mainly useful for those who are deficient. Because too much selenium can be toxic, stick to recommended amounts and check with your pharmacist or doctor before supplementing.
