CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS
Why this applies to Ethinyl Estradiol, Ethynodiol Diacetate
Ethinyl Estradiol, Ethynodiol Diacetate falls under CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS — the group Selenium interacts with.
Some research suggests that oral contraceptives increase serum selenium levels in women taking oral contraceptives; however, other research shows no change in selenium levels. It is suggested that an increase could be due to increased carrier proteins, indicating a redistribution of selenium rather than a change in total body selenium.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the good news: this pairing is pretty low on the worry list. The connection runs the opposite direction from what most people expect. Your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol with ethynodiol diacetate combo) doesn't get changed by selenium. Instead, the pill may slightly nudge your blood selenium up. Researchers think this happens because estrogen boosts certain carrier proteins, so selenium gets shuffled around in your blood rather than your body actually holding onto more of it.
The studies don't even fully agree, and nobody has linked this to real problems with your pill working or with selenium toxicity. So this won't make your contraceptive stronger or weaker. Still, since high-dose selenium can be harmful, stick to recommended amounts and check with your pharmacist before adding a supplement.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ethinyl Estradiol, Ethynodiol Diacetate page
“The stakes here are pregnancy prevention, so I read this list with genuine seriousness. Ethinyl estradiol with ethynodiol diacetate (Zovia, Demulen, Kelnor) is a combined birth control pill, and the interactions that concern me most are the ones that can quietly weaken it.”

About Selenium
What is Selenium?
- Thyroid health support
- Antioxidant support
- Immune support
- General nutrient supplementation
- Reproductive/fertility support
Selenium is an essential trace mineral your body needs in small amounts for thyroid function, antioxidant defense, and immune health. Most people who eat a varied diet get enough, and supplements are mainly useful for those who are deficient. Because too much selenium can be toxic, stick to recommended amounts and check with your pharmacist or doctor before supplementing.
