What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 0 of its 1 active ingredient.

This product contains one active ingredient: red raspberry leaf in liquid form, suspended in cane alcohol and distilled water. Red raspberry leaf is the dried leaf of the raspberry plant, traditionally used in herbal preparations.

Does it work?

Insufficient evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Insufficient

There isn't enough reliable clinical evidence to rate this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: pregnancy and menstrual health support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Dysmenorrhea, Labor pain, Menorrhagia, Parturition, Pregnancy-induced nausea and vomiting, postpartum recovery — and 1 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Red Raspberry is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Pregnancy-induced nausea and vomiting (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Red Raspberry is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Labor pain, Parturition, Dysmenorrhea, Menorrhagia.

The evidence we hold doesn't establish that red raspberry leaf is effective for the conditions listed—aging skin, heart disease, respiratory infections, heart failure, or diabetes all carry a rating of insufficient reliable evidence to rate. That means the data aren't strong enough yet to say whether it works for these purposes.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Red raspberry leaf is generally well tolerated by most adults, though the overall safety evidence is limited. The most common side effects reported with oral use are diarrhea, gastrointestinal upset, and upper belly pain—but these don't typically occur at standard doses.

One occupational case of asthma-like symptoms (wheezing and shortness of breath) was reported from inhaling raspberry powder, though that's not relevant to drinking this liquid. For pregnancy, the safety data show conflicting ratings—some sources list it as likely safe, others as possibly safe, and one as likely unsafe.

The guidance isn't settled, so talk with your doctor or midwife before using it in pregnancy. For breastfeeding, there isn't enough reliable information to know either way; discuss it with your own healthcare provider if you're considering it while nursing.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, taking red raspberry leaf with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding.
In vitro research suggests that red raspberry leaf extract has antiplatelet activity and enhances the in vitro effects of the antiplatelet medication cangrelor. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Insulin

Red raspberry leaf might reduce glucose levels in patients being treated with insulin.
In one case report, a 38-year-old patient with gestational diabetes, whose blood glucose was being controlled with medical nutrition therapy and insulin, developed hypoglycemia after consuming two servings of raspberry leaf tea daily for 3 days beginning at 32 weeks' gestation. The patient required an insulin dose reduction. The hypoglycemia was considered to be probably related to use of red raspberry leaf tea.

Does Organic Raspberry Leaf by Ra Herbals interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Organic Raspberry Leaf has a known interaction with 135 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Organic Raspberry Leaf contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant?
The safety data we hold on red raspberry leaf in pregnancy are mixed—some sources rate it likely safe or possibly safe, others list it as likely unsafe. Because the guidance isn't clear and settled, talk with your doctor or midwife before using it in pregnancy. They know your individual situation and can give you personalized advice.
Is red raspberry leaf effective for diabetes?
The evidence we hold rates diabetes as having insufficient reliable evidence to determine whether red raspberry leaf works for it. That said, it does interact with insulin and may lower blood glucose, so if you have diabetes and take insulin, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
What are the most common side effects?
Orally, diarrhea, gastrointestinal upset, and upper belly pain have been reported, but these don't typically happen at standard doses. Red raspberry fruit itself is well tolerated; the leaf has limited safety data overall.
