What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Organic Lemon Balm against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Organic Lemon Balm by Ra Herbals
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Lemon Balm, a plant traditionally used for relaxation and mood support. The liquid form also includes cane alcohol and distilled water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lemon balm is rated possibly effective for treating cold sores (herpes labialis), reducing stress, and supporting mood. The evidence isn't conclusive, but clinical trials suggest it may help with these uses.
Keep in mind that "possibly effective" means the research shows promise, not that it's proven to work in all people or all situations.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults. The most commonly reported side effects are dizziness and sedation, but clinical trials found these don't happen more often with lemon balm than with placebo.
A few people using topical lemon balm cream for cold sores reported mild skin irritation, but again, this was not more common than with placebo. High doses and long-term safety haven't been well studied, so if you're thinking of using it regularly or in larger amounts, check with your pharmacist first.
During pregnancy, there isn't enough reliable safety data, so it's best to avoid lemon balm unless your doctor advises otherwise. While breastfeeding, safety information is limited — talk to your doctor before using it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start lemon balm, check with your pharmacist if you take any CNS depressants — including sedatives, sleeping pills, anxiety medications, pain relievers like opioids, or any other drugs that slow your nervous system. Also flag any thyroid hormone replacement therapy you're on.
Both types of interactions are Moderate severity and could affect how your medications work.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Lemon balm may be worth considering if you're looking for a possibly effective way to manage cold sores, stress, or mild low mood. If you take CNS depressants (like sedatives or opioids) or thyroid hormone replacement, you'll need to check your specific medications first — this product can interact with both.
Talk to your pharmacist before adding it to your routine, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking any regular medications.

Organic Lemon Balm by Ra Herbals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Lemon Balm by Ra Herbals has documented interactions with two medication types.
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants (drugs that slow your brain and nervous system activity) — sedatives, sleeping pills, anxiety medications, and opioids. Lemon balm appears to have its own calming effect on the nervous system, so taking it with these drugs could add up to more drowsiness or sedation than either one alone.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The second interaction is with thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Lemon balm may interfere with how well your thyroid medication works by blocking the receptor that signals your thyroid to function.
Both interactions are rated Moderate severity.
Altogether, these interactions span 264 individual medications. If you take any CNS depressant or thyroid hormone replacement, use the medication checker below before you add this product to your routine.

Lemon Balm
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
