Phosphatidylserine is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety isn't fully established. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are flatulence, gastrointestinal upset, headache, insomnia (especially at higher doses around 600 mg), and nausea.

Phosphatidylcholine is also generally well tolerated in food and supplement amounts, but high doses can cause digestive upset—and a very large dose of 30 grams per day may trigger diarrhea. Common side effects with smaller doses include altered taste, bloating, diarrhea, itching, nausea, sweating, and vomiting.

The safety data advises against phosphatidylserine use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. For phosphatidylcholine, choline is needed in pregnancy, but supplement safety beyond food sources is not well studied—talk with your doctor before using it while pregnant or breastfeeding.
