This product has three active ingredients. Phosphatidylserine (listed here as both L-a-Phosphatidyl-L-serine and as a blend component) is thought to support brain function and may help with memory in older age.
L-a-Phosphatidylcholine is a compound related to choline, an important nutrient for nerve and brain health. The capsules also contain inactive ingredients — cellulose, magnesium stearate, and gellan gum — which are standard binders and capsule materials.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for phosphatidylserine is strongest for age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer disease, where it's rated Possibly Effective based on available studies. For other uses — athletic performance, ADHD, general cognitive function, and dementia — the evidence isn't solid enough to rate yet.
Phosphatidylcholine shows Possibly Effective evidence for ulcerative colitis. For its other studied uses — liver disease, Alzheimer disease, and anxiety — evidence is still insufficient.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Phosphatidylserine is generally well tolerated, though long-term safety hasn't been fully studied. The most common side effects are flatulence, stomach upset, headache, insomnia, and nausea — insomnia is more likely at higher doses (600 mg).
Phosphatidylcholine is also well tolerated in food and supplement amounts, though high doses can cause digestive upset. At very high doses (30 grams per day), you might see diarrhea, bloating, or nausea; more modest amounts can still cause altered taste, nausea, or vomiting in some people.
For pregnancy: there isn't enough safety data for phosphatidylserine, so it's best to avoid it. Phosphatidylcholine's safety as a supplement in pregnancy hasn't been well studied — while choline itself is needed, talk with your doctor before taking supplements.
Breastfeeding safety is unknown for both ingredients; speak with your healthcare provider first.
