Picrorhiza Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herbal Terra
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Picrorhiza against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Picrorhiza by Herbal Terra contains one active ingredient: picrorhiza (Picrorhiza kurroa) dried rhizome liquid extract. The product also includes menstruum, an inactive ingredient used in the liquid formulation.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for picrorhiza is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for vitiligo.
For asthma, the data suggest it's possibly ineffective. For other uses — chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and hepatitis — we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Picrorhiza has limited human safety data, so approach it with caution. When taken by mouth, it may cause vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, rash, itching, or dizziness in some people.
The safety data advise against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know it's safe in those situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist if you take immunosuppressant medications (like cyclosporine or tacrolimus) or any drugs to control blood sugar. Both are Moderate severity interactions — picrorhiza may reduce how well immunosuppressants work and may lower your blood sugar too much when combined with diabetes medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Picrorhiza might be worth considering if you're exploring traditional remedies for vitiligo, but the evidence for other common uses is weak or unknown. If you take immunosuppressants or diabetes medications, you'll need to talk with your pharmacist or doctor first — this product could interfere with how those drugs work.
Given the limited safety data, it's especially important to get personalized advice before starting.

Picrorhiza by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Picrorhiza by Herbal Terra has documented interactions with two major drug categories.
The most serious concern is with immunosuppressant medications (like cyclosporine, tacrolimus, and azathioprine). Picrorhiza appears to stimulate immune activity, which could theoretically work against these drugs and reduce their effectiveness — a Moderate severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The second concern is with diabetes medications. Animal research suggests picrorhiza can lower blood sugar levels on its own, so taking it alongside antidiabetes drugs could push your blood sugar too low (low blood sugar/hypoglycemia).
This is also a Moderate severity interaction, and it means you'd need to monitor your levels closely and possibly adjust your dose. Altogether, these interactions span 202 individual medications.
Before you start this product, check your exact medications with the search tool on this page — especially if you take anything to suppress your immune system or control your blood sugar.

Picrorhiza (Picrorhiza kurroa) dried rhizome liquid extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Evidence from animal research suggests that an extract of picrorhiza can reduce fasting and non-fasting blood sugar levels. Theoretically, picrorhiza might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.
Immunosuppressants
Picrorhiza seems to have immunostimulating activity. Theoretically, picrorhiza may interfere with immunosuppressant therapy. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).
