Probiotic Acidophilus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Probiotic Acidophilus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This capsule contains 9 active ingredients: several live probiotic bacteria — two strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus (NCIMB-30157 and NCIMB-30156), plus Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium animalis var. lactis, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Streptococcus thermophilus — along with Fructooligosaccharides, a prebiotic (a food source for beneficial bacteria). The capsule itself contains cellulose, silica, titanium dioxide color, and magnesium stearate as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these probiotics is mixed. Lactobacillus acidophilus (both strains) is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis, but possibly ineffective for atopic disease.
Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections. Streptococcus thermophilus and Fructooligosaccharides don't have established evidence in our data for any of the conditions tested.
The evidence for the other probiotic strains in this product isn't available to us.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. However, there is some concern that live probiotic organisms could theoretically cause infection in certain patients — cases of bacteremia (bacteria in the blood), sepsis, and other serious infections have been reported, though most occurred in people with weakened immune systems or underlying serious illness.
Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain, and diarrhea are uncommon but possible with this product. Streptococcus thermophilus and Fructooligosaccharides may cause gas and bloating, especially at higher doses.
The safety data on these ingredients during pregnancy and breastfeeding isn't on file; talk with your doctor or pharmacist before use if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, double-check your antibiotic medications with the search tool on this page. Moderate interactions are documented between antibiotics and two of the Lactobacillus acidophilus strains and Bifidobacterium bifidum in this blend — timing your doses apart can help manage it.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic blend may help with IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, or other gut issues — but the evidence is still developing. If you're taking antibiotics, you'll need to time this carefully: space out your doses.
People with weakened immune systems should check with their doctor first. For anyone else, talk to your pharmacist before you start, especially if you're on other medications or have ongoing health concerns.

Probiotic Acidophilus by Puritan's Pride Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Probiotic Acidophilus by Puritan's Pride can interact with antibiotic drugs.
The two strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus in this product — NCIMB-30157 and NCIMB-30156 — both carry a Moderate interaction with antibiotics. Since these probiotics contain live organisms, taking them at the same time as antibiotics might kill enough of the beneficial bacteria to make the probiotic less effective.
Timing matters here: separate your antibiotic and probiotic doses.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Bifidobacterium bifidum in this blend also shows a Moderate interaction with antibiotics for the same reason — live organisms + antibiotics = reduced probiotic benefit.
We couldn't check three other probiotic strains in this product: Lactobacillus salivarius CUL-61, Lactobacillus plantarum CUL-66, Lactobacillus rhamnosus CUL-63, and Bifidobacterium animalis var. lactis NCIMB 30172. Streptococcus thermophilus CUL-68 and Fructooligosaccharides showed no interactions in our data.
Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.

Probiotic Blend
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
