Probiotic Advanced Essentials Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Probiotic Advanced Essentials against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Probiotic Advanced Essentials by Indiana Botanic Gardens
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Probiotic Advanced Essentials contains 8 ingredients, including three live probiotic bacteria—Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, and Bifidobacterium bifidum—along with Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus plantarum, which support digestive and immune health. The formulation also includes inulin, a type of dietary fiber that feeds beneficial gut bacteria, and sodium.
The remaining ingredients are inactive fillers and binders (microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, pectin, sodium carbonate, stearic acid, guar gum, and turmeric).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these ingredients is mixed. Inulin is possibly effective for constipation, obesity, and diabetes.
The probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Helicobacter pylori infection, and bacterial vaginosis, though it appears possibly ineffective for atopic disease. Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections.
Bifidobacterium longum's effectiveness hasn't been reliably established for the conditions studied. For many other uses, the data we hold aren't sufficient to rate these ingredients.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Inulin is generally well tolerated but commonly causes gas, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation—especially at doses over 30 grams—though these are usually mild. The live probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children, though rare cases of infection (bacteremia or sepsis) have occurred, mainly in critically ill or immune-compromised patients.
Sodium is safe at normal dietary amounts but too much is linked to high blood pressure and heart disease; the facts advise against sodium supplements or very high intake without medical guidance. For pregnancy and lactation, inulin and the probiotics (L. acidophilus, B. longum, B. bifidum) are rated possibly or likely safe, though data on L. acidophilus and B. bifidum during lactation are not on file.
Sodium carries mixed safety ratings—possibly unsafe and likely safe ratings appear in the data—so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before use in pregnancy.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check these medication types before taking this product with your doctor or pharmacist: blood-pressure-lowering drugs (antihypertensives), because sodium can reduce their effect; lithium, since sodium changes can cause toxicity; diabetes medications, because inulin might lower blood sugar; antibiotics, because they can kill the live probiotics; corticosteroids, didanosine (HIV), sodium phosphate bowel-prep solutions, tolvaptan, and other sodium-containing drugs—all because of the risk of high blood sodium.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product might help with irritable bowel syndrome, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, or constipation if the probiotic and inulin evidence appeals to you. However, if you take blood-pressure medication, lithium, diabetes drugs, or any antibiotic, or if you need to limit sodium, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting—the sodium and antibiotic interactions are real concerns.
Healthy people without these medications or conditions who can tolerate fiber-related bloating may find this generally well tolerated.

Probiotic Advanced Essentials by Indiana Botanic Gardens Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Probiotic Advanced Essentials by Indiana Botanic Gardens interacts with medications through its sodium, inulin, and three probiotic species (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, and Bifidobacterium bifidum) content.
The most serious concern is sodium's Moderate interaction with blood-pressure-lowering drugs (antihypertensives): high sodium intake can reduce their effectiveness and may require increased doses to control blood pressure.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Sodium also carries Moderate interactions with corticosteroids (which can cause sodium retention and raise the risk of high blood sodium), lithium (where sodium changes can shift lithium levels and cause toxicity), didanosine (an HIV medication), sodium phosphate bowel-prep solutions, tolvaptan (a water-balance drug), and other sodium-containing medications—all through the risk of dangerously high blood sodium. Inulin poses a Minor interaction with diabetes medications, as it might theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
The three live-organism probiotics (L. acidophilus, B. longum, and B. bifidum) each carry a Moderate interaction with antibiotics: taking them together may reduce the probiotics' effectiveness because antibiotics can kill the live bacteria.
We could not check two ingredients—Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus plantarum—because we hold no interaction data for them. Altogether, these interactions span 473 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Probiotic Advanced Essentials with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Sodium
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, a high intake of dietary sodium might reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs.
High intake of dietary sodium can increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, high intake of sodium may necessitate increased use of antihypertensive medications to achieve blood pressure control in some patients, such as those with chronic kidney disease.
Corticosteroids
Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Didanosine (Videx)
Concomitant use of didanosine with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Didanosine formulations contain a significant amount of sodium.
Lithium
Altering dietary intake of sodium might alter the levels and clinical effects of lithium.
High sodium intake can reduce plasma concentrations of lithium by increasing lithium excretion. Reducing sodium intake can significantly increase plasma concentrations of lithium and cause lithium toxicity in patients being treated with lithium carbonate. Stabilizing sodium intake is shown to reduce the percentage of patients with lithium level fluctuations above 0.8 mEq/L. Patients taking lithium should avoid significant alterations in their dietary intake of sodium.
Sodium Phosphates
Theoretically, concomitant use of sodium phosphate with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Use of high doses (> 45 mL in 24 hours) of sodium phosphate, such as those used for bowel cleansing before surgery, can lead to serious electrolyte disturbances, including hypernatremia. The risk of hypernatremia is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Sodium-Containing Drugs
Concomitant use of sodium-containing drugs with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia and long-term sodium-related complications.
The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level of 2.3 grams of sodium daily indicates the intake at which it is believed that chronic disease risk increases for the apparently healthy population. Some medications contain high quantities of sodium. When used in conjunction with sodium supplements or high-sodium diets, the CDRR may be exceeded. Additionally, concomitant use may increase the risk for hypernatremia; this risk is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Tolvaptan (Samsca)
Theoretically, concomitant use of tolvaptan with sodium might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Tolvaptan is a vasopressin receptor 2 antagonist that is used to increase sodium levels in patients with hyponatremia. Patients taking tolvaptan should use caution with the use of sodium salts such as sodium chloride.
Probiotic Blend
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Inulin
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, inulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia with antidiabetes drugs.
Some clinical research shows that inulin improves glycemic control in patients with diabetes; however, it is unclear if it has hypoglycemic effects.
