ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Cefpodoxime Proxetil

Cefpodoxime Proxetil falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Bifidum interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind: cefpodoxime is an antibiotic, and its whole job is to kill bacteria. The catch is that it can't tell the difference between the bacteria causing your infection and the friendly Bifidobacterium bifidum bacteria in your probiotic. So if you swallow them at the same time, the cefpodoxime may wipe out a good chunk of the live organisms in your supplement before they ever get to work. This doesn't make the antibiotic weaker or more dangerous, it just makes the probiotic less useful.

The simple fix is timing. Try to space your probiotic and your cefpodoxime by at least 2 hours. This is theoretical, based on how the two work, so don't stress, but if you have questions, your pharmacist is happy to help you map out a schedule.

“If you have been prescribed cefpodoxime proxetil (Vantin), an oral antibiotic, this list calls for genuine care, and activated charcoal is where to start. It is the only major-rated interaction among the 55 on file, and it can soak up the antibiotic in your gut, leaving you with less medicine than your infection needs.”
