Probiotic Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Alani Nu
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Probiotic against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy
Probiotic is a dietary supplement by Alani Nu with 2 active ingredients. Its ingredients are commonly taken for digestive health and balance, diarrhea (including antibiotic-related), vaginal yeast and bacterial infections.Based on those ingredients, 182 medications have a known interaction with it, the most serious rated moderate. HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Probiotic by Alani Nu
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This capsule contains 7 active ingredients: three Lactobacillus species (L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, and L. helveticus), three Bifidobacterium species (B. animalis lactis, B. bifidum, and the related organisms in the blend), and Lactobacillus acidophilus — all live bacterial cultures meant to support your gut microbiome. It also includes fructooligosaccharide (FOS), a prebiotic fiber that feeds beneficial bacteria.
The inactive ingredients are hypromellose (a capsule material) and vitamin C. These are fillers and binders that help the capsule hold together and protect the contents.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these bacterial strains is mixed and limited. Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Helicobacter pylori infection, and bacterial vaginosis — though "possibly effective" means the evidence is suggestive, not definitive.
Bifidobacterium bifidum is rated possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections. For most other uses listed — including allergic rhinitis, anxiety, cognitive function, and depression — the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate.
FOS shows insufficient evidence for its intended uses as well (constipation, cholesterol, diabetes, travelers' diarrhea, and bone health).
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The probiotics here are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. However, people with weakened immune systems or serious illness should be cautious before starting, since live bacteria can theoretically cause infection in vulnerable patients — though this is rare.
Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain, and mild digestive upset can happen, especially when you first start or at higher doses of FOS, but they're usually uncommon and mild. For pregnancy, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are rated possibly safe, but data on lactation and the other strains are not on file.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or nursing to get personalized advice about whether this product fits your situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on antibiotics (or planning to start them) — these are Moderate-severity interactions that can reduce how well the probiotic works. Separate the timing of your antibiotic and this supplement to protect the beneficial bacteria.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic makes sense if you're dealing with IBS, antibiotic-related diarrhea, or certain bacterial infections where one of these strains has some evidence. Just know that antibiotics will interfere with it, so timing matters.
If you're immunocompromised or seriously ill, check with your doctor first. Have your medications reviewed with your pharmacist or doctor before you start, especially if you're on an antibiotic course.

Probiotic by Alani Nu Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Alani Nu Probiotic contains several bacterial strains that interact with antibiotic drugs.
Through its Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Lactobacillus helveticus content, this product may decrease the effectiveness of the probiotics themselves when taken together with antibiotics — because antibiotics can kill the live organisms in the probiotic. These are Moderate-severity interactions.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The concern is straightforward: probiotics work because they contain living bacteria. Antibiotics kill bacteria, including the beneficial ones you're trying to add.
If you're on an antibiotic course, timing matters. The facts show we could not check three other bacterial strains in this product (Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Bifidobacterium animalis lactis), so interaction data on those isn't on file.
Fructooligosaccharide (FOS), a prebiotic ingredient included here, has no interactions documented in our data. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
If you're taking an antibiotic right now or planning to start one, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about timing — separating the doses can help protect the probiotic's effectiveness.

Probiotic Blend
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
