ProtoDophilus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking ProtoDophilus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
ProtoDophilus contains 10 active probiotic bacterial strains — three Bifidobacterium species, five Lactobacillus species, and one Streptococcus thermophilus strain — plus inert ingredients (cellulose, FOS, ascorbyl palmitate, and silica) that serve as fillers and preservatives. Each strain is a live microorganism meant to support your gut flora.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these individual strains is uneven. Lactobacillus acidophilus shows possibly effective ratings for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
The other strains either lack enough reliable evidence to rate their effectiveness or showed possibly ineffective results in the data we hold. Streptococcus thermophilus has insufficient evidence for the conditions studied.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The probiotic strains in this product are generally well tolerated in healthy people. However, caution is needed if you are seriously ill, immune-compromised, or a preterm infant — there have been rare cases of these bacteria causing blood infections (bacteremia) in critically ill patients.
Mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea have been reported rarely. One patient reported a dry cough.
Pregnancy and lactation safety data for Lactobacillus acidophilus are not on file; for the other strains with data, the rating is possibly safe, but you should check with your doctor or pharmacist before use.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
The main medication type to double-check is antibiotic drugs (a Moderate interaction). Since the probiotics are living organisms, antibiotics taken at the same time can kill them off.
Separate your doses by a few hours to protect the supplement's effectiveness.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a multi-strain probiotic best suited for people with healthy immune systems who want to support gut health, especially those taking or recovering from antibiotics. If you're seriously ill, immunocompromised, or pregnant, talk to your pharmacist or doctor first.

ProtoDophilus by Protocol For Life Balance Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
ProtoDophilus by Protocol For Life Balance is a 10-strain probiotic capsule.
Three of its bacterial strains have documented interactions with medications, and we could not check four others.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Bifidobacterium breve all interact with antibiotic drugs (a Moderate severity interaction). Since these probiotics contain living organisms, taking them at the same time as antibiotics may kill off a significant portion of the beneficial bacteria and reduce their effectiveness.
The solution is straightforward: separate your antibiotic doses from this supplement by a few hours.
We could not check Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus salivarius, and Lactobacillus plantarum — we hold no interaction data for these strains. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
Before you start, run your exact medications through the checker on this page, especially if you take antibiotics.

Bifidobacterium longum BI-05
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Lactobacillus acidophilus (La-14)
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium breve (Bb-03)
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium breve with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. breve.
Since B. breve preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. breve preparations by at least 2 hours.
