Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: French Maritime Pine (Pinus pinaster) extract, standardized as Pycnogenol. It's a plant-derived compound traditionally used for circulation and joint health.
The capsule itself is made from vegetarian material, and the inactive ingredients include plant fiber and ascorbyl palmitate (a form of vitamin C used as a preservative).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Research shows the extract is possibly effective for osteoarthritis and chronic venous insufficiency (swelling and discomfort from poor blood flow in the legs). For asthma, evidence also suggests it may be possibly effective.
However, for high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), the available data suggests it's possibly ineffective — so this wouldn't be a reliable choice if that's your main goal.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Maritime pine bark extract is generally well tolerated in short-term studies, though long-term safety hasn't been fully established. The most common side effects reported are stomach upset, dizziness, and vertigo.
Headache and a single case of chest pain have been reported in trials, though it's unclear whether the extract was directly responsible. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety data — the facts advise against use in both situations, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing.
Meds to double-check

Before you start, check your list against blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (Moderate interaction), diabetes medications (Moderate interaction), and immunosuppressants (Moderate interaction). These are the three medication types with documented concerns.

The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This supplement may help with osteoarthritis, leg swelling from poor circulation, or asthma symptoms based on available research. However, if you take blood thinners, diabetes medication, or immunosuppressants, you'll need to check with your pharmacist first — the extract could amplify or interfere with how those drugs work.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding aren't recommended without medical guidance.

Pycnogenol 100 mg by Pure Encapsulations Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Pycnogenol by Pure Encapsulations contains French Maritime Pine extract, which has documented interactions with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, clopidogrel, or aspirin). Maritime pine bark extract may slow down how your blood clots, which theoretically raises the risk of bleeding when combined with these medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
This extract may also lower blood sugar, so if you take diabetes medications, there's a Moderate risk of your blood sugar dropping too far. One clinical study showed this effect in patients already on diabetes treatment — you'd need close monitoring and possibly a dose adjustment.
Additionally, if you're taking immunosuppressants (medications that calm down your immune system), the extract might work against them, since research suggests it has immune-stimulating activity.
Almost all of the medications this product could affect fall into one of these three categories. Use the interaction checker below to search your exact prescriptions before you start.
