Pygeum Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herbal Terra
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Pygeum against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Pygeum by Herbal Terra
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Herbal Terra's Pygeum is a single-ingredient liquid extract made from the dried bark of Prunus africana, an African plum tree. The extract is certified organic and suspended in a menstruum (a liquid used to dissolve and carry herbal active compounds).
That's it — one active ingredient, no other botanicals mixed in.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Pygeum is likely effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — the non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that causes urinary symptoms in many men. For other uses listed in research — Alzheimer disease, malaria, sexual desire, and psychosis — the evidence isn't established well enough to rate it.
If you're considering this for BPH, it may help; for anything else, the data doesn't support a reliable benefit yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pygeum is generally well tolerated in the short term, but good long-term safety data are thin. A small number of trial participants reported nausea and abdominal pain, though the rate was similar to placebo, so they weren't clearly linked to the herb itself.
The safety data advises against use in pregnancy because it's meant for men's prostate health and hasn't been tested safely in pregnant people. There isn't enough safety information for breastfeeding, so it's best avoided then too.
Meds to double-check
No known interactions
No interactions are documented in our data for the ingredients we checked. Still, use the medication search tool on this page for your exact prescriptions before starting, and confirm with your own doctor or pharmacist that Pygeum is safe to add alongside everything else you take.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're a man with BPH symptoms, Pygeum may be worth trying — it has solid evidence backing it for that use. If you're taking any medications, run them through the checker on this page before you start, and mention it to your doctor or pharmacist to confirm it fits your health picture.
Avoid it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
