Reishi Extract Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Reishi Extract against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Reishi Extract by Host Defense Mushrooms
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This liquid contains two active reishi extracts: mycelium and fruit body, both from the reishi mushroom. The product also holds water and alcohol as inactive ingredients that carry the extracts.
Does it work?
No specific claim
The evidence here is pretty thin. For lowering cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), reishi comes up possibly ineffective — the data doesn't support it.
For altitude sickness, Alzheimer's disease, and athletic performance, we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works or not. That doesn't mean it doesn't help those issues — just that we don't have the solid research to know.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Reishi is generally well tolerated in the short term, but we don't have good long-term safety data, so we can't tell you what happens if you take it for months or years. The most common side effects are dizziness, dry mouth, itching, nausea, rash, and stomach upset.
Some people report sore throat or runny nose, and in rare cases, insomnia and headache. If you're allergic to mushroom spores, you could have a respiratory reaction.
There's not enough safety data for pregnancy or breastfeeding, so it's best to avoid this product if you're pregnant or nursing. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized guidance.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist before starting if you take blood thinners (anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs) — especially at higher doses, reishi may increase bleeding risk. Also double-check blood pressure medications and diabetes medications, both of which could have their effects increased by reishi.
Altogether, these interactions span 372 individual medications — run your prescriptions through the tool on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure marketed for general wellness rather than one specific gradeable purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Reishi Extract may appeal to someone looking to explore mushroom supplements, but it's not a proven remedy for the conditions we often see it marketed for. If you take blood pressure meds, blood thinners, or diabetes medications, you need to check this with your pharmacist first.
Keep your expectations realistic and don't take it long-term without talking to us.

Reishi Extract by Host Defense Mushrooms Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Reishi Extract by Host Defense Mushrooms contains reishi mycelium and fruit body extracts, both of which interact with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners (anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs) — at higher doses, reishi may increase bleeding risk, though a lower dose of 1.5 grams daily doesn't appear to affect clotting. This is rated Moderate severity.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
You'll also want to check if you take blood pressure medications (antihypertensive drugs). Reishi can lower blood pressure in some people, and combining it with blood pressure drugs might push your pressure too low.
Similarly, if you're on diabetes medications (antidiabetes drugs), reishi may theoretically add to their blood-sugar-lowering effect, though its real-world impact in people with type 2 diabetes has been inconsistent. Both interactions are Moderate.
Altogether, these interactions span 372 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions before you start.

Reishi Mycelium Extract, Fresh
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, high doses of reishi mushroom might increase the risk of bleeding.
A dose of 1.5 grams daily of reishi mushroom does not seem to decrease platelet aggregation, but a higher dose of 3 grams daily does.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, reishi mushroom might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that reishi mushroom decreases blood sugar. However, in patients with type 2 diabetes, taking reishi mushroom does not reduce fasting glucose levels, and its effects on glycated hemoglobin are inconsistent.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, concurrent use of reishi mushroom with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Reishi mushroom has shown hypotensive activity in animal research. Clinical evidence suggests that reishi mushroom reduces blood pressure in some, but not all, patients with hypertension.
