Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains 2 active probiotic ingredients: Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1 and Bifidobacterium lactis UABla-12, both live beneficial bacteria intended to support digestive health. The inactive ingredients include xylitol (a sweetener), inulin (a prebiotic fiber), cherry and berry flavors, and several binders and flow agents to hold the tablet together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis based on the evidence we hold. For atopic disease (allergic and inflammatory conditions), the evidence suggests it's possibly ineffective.
For acute respiratory distress syndrome, there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate it either way. We have no effectiveness data on file for Bifidobacterium lactis UABla-12.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy children and adults. Minor gastrointestinal side effects like stomach discomfort, bloating, gas, or diarrhea can occur when taking it with other probiotics, but these are uncommon.
In rare cases, the live bacteria have been associated with serious infections in people with weakened immunity or certain underlying conditions — this is thought to happen when bacteria move from their normal location in the gut to other parts of the body. Before giving this to your child, especially if they have a serious illness or compromised immune system, talk with your doctor.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Antibiotic drugs (Moderate severity) can reduce the effectiveness of the Lactobacillus acidophilus in this product by killing the live organisms. Space out the timing of antibiotics and this probiotic — your doctor or pharmacist can advise on the best schedule for your child.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic may help with IBS, antibiotic-related diarrhea, and a few other digestive or bacterial concerns, though the evidence is not definitive. The main thing to watch is taking it separately from antibiotics so the bacteria aren't killed off.
If your child has any chronic illness, immunosuppression, or you're unsure whether it's right for them, check with your pediatrician or pharmacist before starting.
