What’s inside
Full disclosure
Saw Palmetto 450 mg contains one active ingredient: saw palmetto, an extract from the berry of the saw palmetto plant. The capsule itself is made from gelatin, which is an inactive ingredient that holds the supplement together.
Saw palmetto has been studied mainly for prostate-related concerns, though the evidence for its usefulness varies by condition.
Does it work?
Leans against
The evidence for saw palmetto is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for one specific procedure — transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), a urological surgery — but possibly ineffective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the enlarged prostate condition many people take it for.
For chronic bronchitis, hair loss (androgenic alopecia), and lower urinary tract symptoms, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works or doesn't.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Saw palmetto is generally well tolerated in adults, and side effects when they do occur are usually mild and go away on their own. The most common ones reported in studies are abdominal pain, constipation, decreased sex drive, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea, runny nose, and vomiting.
Rarely, skin reactions (including blisters) have been reported, and isolated cases of heart rhythm changes or high blood pressure have been noted in people taking it. The safety data advises against use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding because of the hormone effects and lack of safety information.
If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this supplement.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any of the following: birth control pills or other contraceptive drugs (Moderate risk of reduced effectiveness), estrogens or hormone therapy (Moderate risk of reduced effectiveness), or blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs like warfarin or aspirin (Moderate risk of increased bleeding).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with graded evidence leaning against its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Saw Palmetto 450 mg may be worth considering if you have questions about prostate health, though the evidence is strongest for one specific surgical procedure rather than benign prostate enlargement itself. If you take birth control, hormone therapy, or blood thinners, check your exact medications with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — this supplement can interfere with all three.
It's not for use in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Saw Palmetto 450 mg by Nature's Bounty Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Saw Palmetto 450 mg by Nature's Bounty does interact with medications.
The main concern is through saw palmetto's effects on three drug types: it may reduce how well estrogens work, it may reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills and other contraceptive drugs, and it may increase bleeding risk with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like aspirin or clopidogrel).
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Estrogens and contraceptive drugs face Moderate risk because saw palmetto appears to have antiestrogenic effects — meaning it may interfere with how these hormones work in your body. If you rely on birth control or hormone therapy, this is something to discuss with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Blood thinners (anticoagulants) and antiplatelet drugs also carry Moderate risk. Saw palmetto is reported to prolong bleeding time, so combining it with these medications could raise your bleeding risk.
Altogether, these interactions span 174 individual medications.
Use the medication checker on this page to look up any prescriptions or over-the-counter drugs you take before you start, and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist.
