HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Serrapeptase by Protocol For Life Balance
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: serrapeptase, a proteolytic enzyme (an enzyme that breaks down protein). It's paired with three inactive ingredients—rice bran, microcrystalline cellulose, and hypromellose—that serve as a filler and capsule material.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for serrapeptase is currently insufficient for most claimed uses. Our data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate its effectiveness for chronic bronchitis, asthma, atherosclerosis, back pain, and osteoporosis.
If you're considering this supplement for one of these conditions, talk it over with your doctor about what the research actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Serrapeptase is generally well tolerated in the short term, though long-term safety hasn't been well studied. The most common side effects reported in trials are epigastric pain (upper abdominal discomfort), general gastrointestinal upset, and nausea—though these occur at rates similar to placebo.
A rare serious side effect, bullous pemphigoid (a blistering skin condition), has been reported. There isn't enough safety data to use this supplement during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you in either situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you're on any blood thinner or antiplatelet medication—whether that's prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal—check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking serrapeptase. The enzyme may increase the risk of bruising and bleeding when combined with these drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Serrapeptase is an enzyme marketed for several conditions, but the evidence is too weak right now to say whether it actually works for any of them. If you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting—the combination could increase bleeding risk.
For short-term use in people not on these medications, it's generally tolerated, though side effects like stomach upset can occur.

Formula
How it works: Serrapeptase (serratiopeptidase) is a protein-digesting enzyme isolated from the friendly bacterium serratia marcescens. Studies indicate that serrapeptase is absorbed intact from the digestive tract and that it acts systemically to support healthy immune system functions and promotes the body's normal healing processes. Some evidence suggests that serrapeptase may support respiratory health by helping to maintain normal mucus secretions.
