What is this page for?

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This powder contains 3 active ingredients. L-tryptophan is an amino acid your body uses to make serotonin, a chemical that affects mood and sleep.
L-theanine is an amino acid from tea that may promote calm without heavy sedation. PharmaGABA is a branded form of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a natural brain chemical involved in relaxation and sleep.
The product also contains inactive ingredients — bamboo shoot extract, natural flavors, stevia leaf extract, citric acid, and malic acid — which are fillers and flavor components.
Does it work?
Not established
Evidence for L-tryptophan as a sleep aid or for depression is limited; the data rates it possibly ineffective for depression and insufficient evidence exists for anxiety, athletic performance, bruxism (teeth grinding), or premenstrual dysphoric disorder. L-theanine shows possibly effective evidence for cognitive function, but insufficient evidence exists for age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, anxiety, OCD, or cancer.
PharmaGABA has insufficient reliable evidence for chronic bronchitis, anxiety, athletic performance, ADHD, cerebral palsy, or other conditions listed in the data we hold. In short, the effectiveness of this sleep product for its intended purpose is not established in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-tryptophan is generally well tolerated but has a significant past safety concern: in 1989, over 1,500 cases of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS)—a serious neurological disorder causing skin changes, hair loss, and rash—were linked to contaminated L-tryptophan from a single Japanese manufacturer. About 95% of cases traced to that source, and the FDA restricted L-tryptophan imports in 1990.
Common mild side effects from L-tryptophan include belching, diarrhea, drowsiness, dry mouth, flatulence, headache, heartburn, lightheadedness, nausea, stomach pain, visual blurring, and vomiting. L-theanine is generally well tolerated short-term but long-term safety is not well studied; reported side effects include headache, drowsiness, increased sleep duration, and increased dream activity.
PharmaGABA is often well tolerated short-term, with reported side effects of drowsiness, gastric upset, minor throat burning, muscle weakness, and nausea, but long-term safety is unclear. None of these ingredients have adequate safety data for pregnancy or breastfeeding — the facts advise against use in both situations.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take CNS depressants (sleep aids, sedatives, anti-anxiety medications, or opioids) — L-tryptophan poses a Major risk of excessive sedation. Also double-check if you take serotonergic drugs such as antidepressants or migraine medications (Moderate risk of serotonin syndrome).
If you take blood pressure medications, confirm first — theanine and GABA may lower blood pressure further.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Kion Sleep Honey Lavender may appeal to someone seeking a natural sleep aid without prescription medication, but the evidence it works is not established in our data. If you take any medication for sleep, mood, blood pressure, or seizures, or if you drink alcohol regularly, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — the interactions are real and could be serious.
This product also carries historical safety concerns about contamination; discuss those with your healthcare provider if you have questions.

Sleep Honey Lavender Flavored by Kion Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Kion Sleep Honey Lavender Flavored Powder interacts with medications through its L-tryptophan, L-theanine, and PharmaGABA content.
The most serious concern is L-tryptophan with CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, alcohol, opioids) — combining them may cause excessive drowsiness and sedation. Altogether, these interactions span 565 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-tryptophan also raises a Moderate concern with serotonergic drugs (certain antidepressants, migraine medications, others). Because L-tryptophan becomes serotonin in your body, adding it to serotonergic medications might increase the risk of serotonin syndrome — a serious condition marked by agitation, rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, muscle rigidity, and fever.
L-theanine and PharmaGABA carry Minor interactions with CNS depressants and Moderate interactions with blood pressure medications. Theanine and GABA may lower blood pressure, potentially strengthening the effect of antihypertensive drugs.
Both also theoretically add to sedation when combined with sleep or anti-anxiety medications, though it's unclear how significant this is in practice.
Check your exact medications with the search tool below before starting this product. If you take any prescription medication for mood, sleep, blood pressure, or seizures, or if you drink alcohol regularly, talk with your doctor or pharmacist first.

L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
PharmaGABA
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking GABA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Some clinical research shows that GABA can decrease blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, GABA might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Endogenous GABA has well-established relaxant effects and GABA(A) receptors have an established physiological role in sleep. However, the effects of GABA supplements are unclear, as it is unknown whether exogenous GABA crosses the blood-brain barrier. Although there have been limited reports of drowsiness or tiredness with GABA supplements, these effects have not been widely reported in clinical studies. Additionally, intravenous GABA 0.1-1 mg/kg has been shown to induce anxiety in a dose-dependent manner.
L-Tryptophan
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-tryptophan with CNS depressants might cause additive sedative effects.
Clinical research shows that L-tryptophan can cause fatigue and drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Theoretically, combining L-tryptophan with serotonergic drugs might cause additive serotonergic effects.
L-tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with L-tryptophan might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders.
