Stay Sharp Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Estroven
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Stay Sharp against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
Estroven Stay Sharp contains 3 active ingredients: lutein, zeaxanthin, and docosahexaenoic acid (an omega-3 fat). Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids — plant pigments that accumulate in the eye and are thought to help protect the retina.
Docosahexaenoic acid is a fatty acid naturally found in the brain and eyes. The softgel also contains inactive ingredients (gelatin, sunflower oil, glycerin, and others) that help deliver the actives.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lutein is possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts — two common vision problems as we age — but the evidence falls short of being strong or definitive. Zeaxanthin is also possibly effective for AMD.
Evidence for zeaxanthin's use in age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, asthma, and breast cancer is insufficient — we simply don't have enough data to rate it either way. We could not check the effectiveness of docosahexaenoic acid from the data on file for this product.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lutein from food and typical supplement doses is generally well tolerated. In trials, doses up to 20 mg daily caused no reported adverse effects.
Zeaxanthin is also generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. For pregnancy and breastfeeding: both lutein and zeaxanthin carry a "Likely Safe" rating, though the data notes that supplement safety (as opposed to food sources) isn't as well studied in these settings.
If you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist to weigh the limited data against your individual needs.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antidiabetes drugs (like metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin), double-check them with the tool below — zeaxanthin may theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar. No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Stay Sharp may be worth considering if you're concerned about age-related eye health, especially AMD or cataracts — lutein and zeaxanthin have some evidence behind them for these conditions, even if it's not ironclad. If you take diabetes medications, check them against the interaction tool on this page first, then confirm with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
For any other questions about your own health or medications, your pharmacist or doctor can give you personalized advice.

Stay Sharp by Estroven Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Estroven Stay Sharp has documented interactions through its zeaxanthin content.
The most serious concern is a moderate interaction with antidiabetes drugs — zeaxanthin may theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) in animal models, though population studies of dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein haven't shown reduced type 2 diabetes risk in humans.

Zeaxanthin
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking zeaxanthin with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In an animal diabetic model, zeaxanthin has hypoglycemic effects. However, population research has found that increasing intake of dietary zeaxanthin plus lutein does not decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
