Stevia Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Stevia against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
Village Vitality Stevia Liquid contains one active ingredient: stevia leaf extract. This is a zero-calorie sweetener derived from stevia plant leaves.
The product also contains vegetable glycerin and deionized water as inactive ingredients (the liquid base).
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold for stevia is insufficient to rate its effectiveness for diabetes, hypertension, or obesity. Some early research suggests stevia extract may lower blood sugar after meals in people with type 2 diabetes, and that it might lower blood pressure in certain patients, but other studies show mixed results.
We don't have reliable enough data to make a claim about whether it works for these purposes.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Purified stevia sweeteners in typical food amounts are generally recognized as safe. However, this is a supplement dose — higher than what you'd get from food — and supplement doses of stevia aren't well studied for long-term safety.
When taken by mouth, stevia appears to be well tolerated overall, and most minor side effects (such as bloating, dizziness, headache, muscle pain, nausea, or numbness) tend to resolve after the first week. Allergic reactions are rare but possible.
Because high-dose supplement safety data is limited, use caution and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start this product, double-check your exact medications with your doctor or pharmacist if you take lithium (mood stabilizer) — this is a moderate-severity concern. Also confirm if you're on blood pressure medications or diabetes drugs, since stevia may lower blood pressure and blood sugar.
No interactions are documented for stevia with other drug categories we hold data on.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Stevia is a zero-calorie sweetener that's well tolerated in food amounts, but this supplement form hasn't been extensively studied at higher doses. If you take lithium, blood pressure medications, or diabetes drugs, you'll need to check with your own doctor or pharmacist before adding it — the interaction risk with lithium is real.
For everyone else, it's generally well tolerated, though long-term safety at supplement doses isn't established.

Stevia by Village Vitality Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Village Vitality Stevia Liquid, which contains stevia leaf extract, does interact with some medications.
The most serious concern is with lithium (a mood stabilizer). Stevia might reduce how your body clears lithium, potentially raising its levels to unsafe ranges — this is a moderate-severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Stevia may also lower blood pressure, so combining it with blood pressure medications (antihypertensive drugs) could theoretically increase the risk of low blood pressure (hypotension). This is a minor-severity interaction.
Similarly, stevia might increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when taken with diabetes medications, also minor in severity.
Altogether, these interactions span 259 individual medications. If you take lithium, any blood pressure drug, or any diabetes medication, run your exact prescriptions through the interaction checker on this page before starting this product.

For each ingredient in Stevia with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Stevia Leaf Extract
Lithium
Theoretically, stevia might decrease clearance and increase levels of lithium.
Animal research suggests that stevia extracts might have diuretic activity. Theoretically, increased reabsorption of lithium along with sodium might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, stevia might increase the risk for hypoglycemia when combined with antidiabetes drugs.
Preliminary clinical research in patients with type 2 diabetes suggests that taking a single dose of stevia extract 1000 mg reduces postprandial blood glucose levels when taken with a meal. However, other clinical research in patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes suggests that taking stevioside 250 mg three times daily does not significantly affect blood glucose levels or glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) after three months of treatment.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, combining stevia or stevia constituents with antihypertensive agents might increase the risk of hypotension.
Stevia extract and stevioside might lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension. However, other clinical research suggests that stevioside does not significantly lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
