Orally, stinging nettle is generally well tolerated when used as directed, though quality and evidence vary by product. The most common side effects from taking it by mouth are constipation or diarrhea.

There's one case report of liver disease in someone taking an herbal detox tea that contained stinging nettle along with other ingredients — a rare event, but worth knowing about. If you touch the raw plant directly on your skin, it causes itching, rash, and stinging; fresh leaves placed in the mouth can cause severe swelling and pain.

Stinging nettle is not recommended during pregnancy due to traditional concerns about effects on the uterus and insufficient safety data. It should also be avoided while breastfeeding until you speak with your doctor or pharmacist, as safety during lactation has not been established.
