What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: phosphatidylserine 100 mg per softgel. Phosphatidylserine is a naturally occurring fat-like compound found in cell membranes.
The softgel also contains inactive ingredients — sunflower oil, vegetarian softgel capsule material, silicon dioxide, and mixed tocopherols — that help deliver and preserve the active ingredient.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Phosphatidylserine is possibly effective for age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer disease based on available evidence. For athletic performance, cognitive function, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and dementia, the evidence we hold is insufficient to make a reliable rating.
Talk with your doctor about what the research actually shows for your specific situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Phosphatidylserine is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety isn't fully established. The most common side effects are flatulence, gastrointestinal upset, headache, insomnia, and nausea.
Insomnia is more likely at higher doses (around 600 mg), and gastrointestinal upset can occur at doses of 200–300 mg per day. There isn't enough safety data to know whether phosphatidylserine is safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so the advice is to avoid it if you're pregnant or nursing.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your individual situation if you're considering this product and are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you use anticholinergic drugs (for overactive bladder, certain poisonings) or cholinergic drugs (for myasthenia gravis, Alzheimer disease, glaucoma). Phosphatidylserine may reduce anticholinergic effectiveness or add to cholinergic effects — both Moderate-severity risks.
Use the medication checker on this page with your exact drugs to be sure.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Phosphatidylserine may help with age-related memory loss or early Alzheimer disease, but the evidence is still limited. If you take anticholinergic or cholinergic medications, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist first — this product could change how those drugs work.
Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your healthcare provider advises otherwise.
