Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: lutein and zeaxanthin. Both are carotenoids — naturally occurring pigments found in leafy greens and colorful vegetables — that accumulate in the eye's macula and lens.
They're included here because they may help protect vision as you age.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lutein is possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. Zeaxanthin is also possibly effective for AMD.
For other conditions listed in the research — retinitis pigmentosa, retinopathy of prematurity, necrotizing enterocolitis, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia — the evidence suggests these ingredients are possibly ineffective. For zeaxanthin and cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, asthma, and breast cancer, there isn't enough reliable evidence to say one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lutein from food and typical supplement doses is generally well tolerated. Doses up to 20 mg daily in trials haven't caused adverse effects.
Zeaxanthin is also generally well tolerated at normal supplement amounts. Both are rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation, though the data on higher supplement doses during these periods isn't as robust as for food sources — if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antidiabetes drugs (such as insulin, metformin, or sulfonylureas), check with our medication checker before starting this product — zeaxanthin may theoretically affect blood sugar control, though the human risk isn't fully clear.

Super Lutein 444 Formula by VisiVite Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Super Lutein 444 Formula by VisiVite contains lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids that support eye health.
Lutein has no documented interactions with medications. Zeaxanthin, however, may interact with antidiabetes drugs (insulin, metformin, sulfonylureas, and similar medications).
In animal studies, zeaxanthin showed blood-sugar-lowering effects, which theoretically could increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if combined with diabetes medications — though human population studies haven't confirmed this risk. Altogether, these interactions span 85 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Because zeaxanthin's effect in humans isn't fully understood, if you take any diabetes medication, it's worth running it through the medication checker on this page before you start this supplement. That said, dietary amounts of both ingredients are considered safe; the caution applies mainly to concentrated supplements at doses higher than food provides.

Theoretically, taking zeaxanthin with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
