Tansy contains thujone, a toxic compound, and internal use is generally discouraged because of poisoning risk. Symptoms of thujone toxicity — rapid pulse, irregular heartbeat, fast breathing, severe stomach upset, vomiting, dilated pupils, liver and kidney damage, and in serious cases death — have been reported, and fatalities have occurred from doses as small as 10 drops of tansy oil, sometimes within 1 to 3.5 hours.

Tansy is likely unsafe in pregnancy because it's been traditionally used to bring on menstruation or abortion. It's also likely unsafe while breastfeeding due to the thujone content.

Topical contact with tansy (a member of the daisy family) has caused skin reactions like eczema and sensitivity to sunlight in some people.
