Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: taurine, an amino acid your body produces naturally and also gets from animal-based foods like meat and fish. The tablet also contains inactive ingredients — sorbitol, stearic acid, silica, modified cellulose gum, and magnesium stearate — which are fillers and binders that hold the tablet together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Taurine is rated possibly effective for hepatitis and congestive heart failure (CHF), meaning some evidence suggests a benefit, but more research is needed to be certain. For weight loss, the data suggests it is possibly ineffective.
The evidence we hold on file doesn't establish its role in other conditions.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Taurine is generally well tolerated in typical doses for up to one year, with the most common side effects being constipation, diarrhea, or indigestion. Serious adverse effects are rare; a small number of case reports describe hypersensitivity reactions, mostly in people with a history of allergies to sulfonamides or sulfites.
Long-term safety beyond one year is less certain, and because there isn't enough reliable data on supplement doses, use only under medical guidance. Taurine is rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation.
Taurine occurs naturally in breast milk, but the safety of supplement doses hasn't been well studied, so discuss use with your doctor or pharmacist if you're nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood pressure-lowering medications (antihypertensive drugs) or lithium. Both interactions are rated Moderate severity, and lithium in particular has a narrow therapeutic window where small changes in blood levels matter.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Taurine may be worth considering if you're interested in support for liver health or heart function, though the evidence is not definitive. If you take blood pressure medication or lithium, this product requires careful coordination with your doctor or pharmacist because of the potential to lower blood pressure further or raise lithium levels.

Calming neurotransmitter
Contains no yeast, dairy, egg, gluten, soy or wheat. Contains no sugar, starch, preservatives, or artificial color, flavor or fragrance.
Formula
Taurine is a crystalline, free-form amino acid. It is a soothing, inhibitory neurotransmitter and plays a major role in stabilizing the heartbeat and electrical activity of the nerves. Taurine is also necessary for the proper functioning of the "sodium/potassium ATP-ase pump", which regulates the ion balance between the cells and the extracellular fluid that surrounds them. This critically important "pump" actually uses 7% to 40% of the ATP energy our bodies produce.

Taurine 500 mg by Source Naturals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Taurine 500 mg by Source Naturals interacts with blood pressure medications and lithium, both at Moderate severity.
Through its taurine content, the product may increase the risk of low blood pressure (hypotension) when combined with blood pressure-lowering drugs, since some clinical evidence suggests taurine itself can reduce both systolic and diastolic readings.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Taurine is also thought to have mild diuretic properties — meaning it promotes fluid loss — which could theoretically reduce how much lithium your body excretes and raise its levels in your blood. Lithium has a narrow window between an effective dose and a toxic one, so any change in how your body handles it matters.
Although no other medication interactions are documented in our data for taurine, the absence of documented interactions is not a guarantee that none exist. Before you start this supplement, run your exact medications — especially any blood pressure medication or lithium — through the checker on this page.
