Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

We hold no graded evidence for this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: support immune defenses and healthy immune function.
  • We looked for evidence on: immune response, infection resistance, antimicrobial defense, immune modulation.
  • Our graded evidence for these ingredients doesn't cover that particular purpose.

The evidence for maitake mushroom's effectiveness isn't established for the conditions we've reviewed. The data we hold rates its use for hay fever, chemotherapy-related anemia, laryngeal cancer, chemotherapy-related diarrhea, and chronic fatigue syndrome as having insufficient reliable evidence to rate.

That means the research to prove or disprove it works for these uses isn't there yet.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Maitake mushroom is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth as a food or supplement, though the full safety profile of concentrated supplements hasn't been completely studied. The most common side effects reported in clinical trials were gastrointestinal—diarrhea and stomach pain (epigastric pain)—and a small number of participants reported nausea.

One person experienced a rash and itching after two doses, which cleared on its own without treatment. The safety data advises against using concentrated maitake supplements during pregnancy or while breastfeeding because there isn't enough data to know either way.

Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, combining maitake mushroom with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical research shows that taking maitake mushroom polysaccharide (MMP) can lower blood glucose levels in patients with types 2 diabetes.

Likelihood Possible Evidence B
Antihypertensive Drugs

Theoretically, combining maitake mushroom with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research shows that maitake mushroom can lower blood pressure.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Warfarin (Coumadin)

There is limited evidence that maitake mushroom may increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
In a case report, a patient previously stabilized on warfarin developed an elevated international normalized ratio (INR) of 5.1 after taking maitake mushroom (Grifron-Pro Maitake D-Fraction) 1 drop/kg daily in three divided doses for one week. The elevated INR resolved after holding warfarin for two days, then reducing the dose by 11%. It is thought that the beta-glucan constituent of maitake mushroom might cause warfarin dissociation from proteins, resulting in increased free warfarin levels and increased warfarin effects.
