Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: 15 mg of Lyc-O-Mato Lycopene, a carotenoid (plant pigment) derived from tomatoes. Lycopene is the compound that gives tomatoes their red color and is thought to act as an antioxidant in the body.
The softgel capsule also contains inactive ingredients—rice bran oil, gelatin, glycerin, purified water, medium chain triglycerides, yellow beeswax, and silica—that serve as the delivery system and help keep the supplement stable.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for lycopene is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for prostate cancer, meaning there's some supporting research but it's not definitive.
For bladder cancer, the data rates it possibly ineffective. For diabetes, exercise-induced asthma, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also called Lou Gehrig's disease), the evidence is insufficient to say either way.
For high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate it. If you're considering this supplement for a specific health concern, talk it over with your doctor—they can tell you what the science supports for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lycopene from food is considered safe, and supplement doses like this one are generally well tolerated. The most common side effects from supplements are gastrointestinal: diarrhea, gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and loss of appetite.
One case of chest pain was reported in a pregnant person taking a different lycopene product, but the link to lycopene itself wasn't confirmed. During pregnancy and while breastfeeding, food amounts of lycopene are fine, but supplements haven't been well studied.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this supplement is right for you if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs—including warfarin, apixaban, aspirin, clopidogrel, and similar medications. Lycopene may theoretically increase the risk of bleeding when combined with these drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Tomato Power Lycopene may be worth considering if you're interested in prostate health and your doctor agrees, but the evidence for other uses is limited or unclear. If you take any blood thinners or antiplatelet medications, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting—this supplement may increase bleeding risk.
During pregnancy or breastfeeding, talk with your healthcare provider first.
